Re: Chess history trivia

Adam Hart-Davis had an unpromising start to his competitive chess career, according to Volume 2 of The Lyttelton Hart-Davis Letters. p56 (letter dated 10 Feb 1957): " ... Adam has been asked to play chess for the School! Fred [AH-D's housemaster at Eton] rightly forbade it, since the match was sche...

Re: 2024 Candidates qualification revised process

FIDE Circuit leader board updated Giri 84.31 So 83.40 Gukesh 79.50 (playing London) Erigaisi 71.56 (playing Gashimov Memorial) I think that the London Chess Classic is not relevant here: even if Gukesh were to win, he would gain an insignificant number of FIDE Circuit points (less than 0.2). He wou...

Re: 2024 Candidates qualification revised process

My calculation is that if So wins, Giri needs to come third to stay ahead of him. If So comes second, Giri needs to come fourth (or higher); fifth would have done, but to score points in the FIDE Circuit one has to come in the top half, so presumably with Duda's withdrawal fifth will score nothing.

Re: European Team Championship November 2023

Chess.com says that the final will be held in-person in Toronto: https://www.chess.com/article/view/cham ... -tour-2023 (you have to scroll down a bit). That is presumably why it is listed on 2700chess, which I think does not include on-line events but does include OTB rapid and blitz

Re: 2024 Candidates qualification revised process

Thanks from me as well. The FIDE site is rather unhelpful in not giving that information. Giri looks likely to win the FIDE Circuit, so Firouzja probably doesn't need to worry about him as a rival for the rating spot. A shame that Gukesh isn't playing in the Sinquefield Cup, so that he could go head...

Re: 2024 Candidates qualification revised process

I think it is now four FIDE circuit events rather than games. Firouja has played two already so the Sinquefield Cup and St Louis Rapid and Blitz will make him eligible. His form not great though so Giri and So could conceivably pass him. I think those three plus Gukesh are now the serious contender...

Re: Pedants United

To be slightly more technical, 'thick' can be measured cardinally, but 'thin' only ordinally: whilst the new product (in the original example) is indeed thinner than the old one, it cannot be twice as thin, though it can be half as thick. Old/young have the same difference. This presumably is a cons...

Re: Pedants United

Isn't the problem here that 'thick' can be measured quantitatively, but 'thin' cannot, despite seeming to be its opposite? Similarly long/short and tall/short - a person can be said to be six foot tall, but not to be four foot short. Hence 'twice as thin' is just meaningless, a category mistake, whi...

Re: British Championship 2023

In other news, Keith recovered from his reverse in round 2 to win the over 50s. As for the over 65s, just following chess24 leaves me confused, looking at the games being shown. I feel quite sure that Terry Chapman has 6/7, but am confident of little else. According to chess_results, in the over 65...

Re: FIDE Rating Consultation

What is not mentioned is that after 2008 FIDE relaxed its requirements for getting an initial rating from having played nine games against rated opponents to have played only five. (FIDE also now allows tournaments in which a player lost all their games to be included in their initial calculation, ...

Re: FIDE Rating Consultation

There is a strange omission in this document. Its main claim is that we can see that the rating system is not working properly because lower-rated players have been doing better against higher-rated players than would be expected, and that the cause of this is that the initial ratings of new players...

Re: Media comments on chess

I've just been sent an advert for a "4-part documentary series, THROUGH THE MIRROR OF CHESS: A CULTURAL EXPLORATION", produced by something called Ideas Roadshow. Does anybody know anything about this? It comes with a plug from Danny Gormally, though as he is one of the contributors maybe that is on...
