Re: Four rounds to go: would you bet on Nepo or the rest?
I'd still take the field against Nepo now, albeit with him now as a strong favourite. Nepo Black against Ding on the last day when he is under huge pressure and Ding is not puts me in mind of the 2013 finish. So still a long way to go.

Re: Candidates Tournament 2020
I watched a stream before the first half where someone suggested to Peter Svidler that maybe Nepo would be persuaded to conspire to give Grischuk a better chance. Peter's response was that he really wanted to see someone trying to have that conversation with Nepo :-) Oddly I think Alekseenko played ...

Re: Reports from Direct Members' representatives
It is difficult to see Tim's comments without the context of his long running dispute with Mike Truran. If one of the people in the CSC team runs for CEO against Mike at the AGM I might vote for them, depending on the respective policy proposals. But I am a bit uncomfortable with an attempt to stop ...

Being a pendant, I'd say Giri is most likely to produce artwork showing Dutch towns. (Nick means Jean not Jan

Re: Takeback requests in online games
But for a rated or a tournament game, I would disagree....What you are also forgetting is the disruptive effect on the other player of a takeback. Well not really, no, as it's basically asual games I'm talking about. (Though in principle I don't see that it should be inconceivable to have the funct...

yes indeed.
A better joke than the one I was going to make about Alex being in sore need of a haircut post lockdown!

Re: Media comments on chess
An interview in The Guardian with the musician Moby You know, you’re asking me to open up such a can of worms. It reminds me of my favourite chess move, which my uncle taught me, where you move your knight so that it puts the king in check but also is going to take the castle.” This is known as a f...

Re: Cheating in chess
I brought up playing poor openings because I don't think having fun in a way that impacts your results is exactly cheating, unless you then take advantage of your lower rating in some way. I think this is connected to the point Matthew is making. Of course he is being, in Jonathan's idiom, a bellend...

Re: ECF Finance Meeting 2021 on 24th April 2021
Indeed, good reasons why this was done in the past, although there are charitable tax incentives available to the ECF too.
But it is notable that the ECF is different to most other chess federations, English Bridge, etc.

Re: Cheating in chess
Oh dear. Am I going to have to stop playing the Morra since it is artificially deflating my rating?

Re: Hansen on Nakamura
She is @chessbae94 on twitter, and largely anonymous which is in itself controversial. Hansen is one of the few people involved to have actually met her in person. I have rather mixed feelings, since although I do watch a bit of chess streaming, I only know the background as gossip. I have no indepe...

Re: Hansen on Nakamura
Well, in the stream you linked although Hansen does criticise Nakamura directly there is a lot more discussion of Nakamura's team and chessbae especially. She has donated very generously to many chess streamers in recent years, but seems to require a good deal of control over the streams in return. ...

Re: ECF Finance Meeting 2021 on 24th April 2021
I raised whether the ECF should/ could organise more chess directly previously. The response here was predominantly that I was criticising the ECF unfairly, but I still think is a legitimate strategy point. I think English chess's historic position is that we do not need the federation to organise m...

Re: Hansen on Nakamura
Of course this wasn't really about Hikaru himself: Dear Global Chess Community, Due to recent events involving concerns about Chessbae's position and actions within the chess streaming community, we have removed all Chess.com moderator and Twitch/Streamer powers from her accounts. While we do wish t...

Re: Events Director OTB chess
I decided not to speculate on whether it was a board level position or not, if only so when someone inevitably and archly refers to uninformed speculation on the internet it wasn't me this time. Shohreh seems to have a very good reputation, so I am happy she is willing to volunteer for the ECF and t...
