A few names on that team sheet from when I first played for Berks in 1976. Re: J D Slater Trophy
It always surprises me how trophies so often seem to go missing. Presumably the organisers know who wins them and arrange for them to be returned in time for the following season’s presentation. On the odd occasion I have been the custodian of a trophy I have always been paranoid about giving it bac...

Re: 2024 Candidates qualification revised process
Thankyou for keeping us up to date with this, Lawrence. It all seems a bit artificial as a method of determining who shall compete for the World Championship, but still.

Re: Very long games in weekend tournaments
Maybe this is one of those cases when a rule created for professional chess doesn't work for amateur chess. The 30 second increment seems enough to stop anyone messing around to induce a blunder against a GM. But against an 1800, seems not. So I am guessing you would suggest longer increments for a...

Re: London Chess Classic 2023
If I am watching online it makes no difference whether it is live or with 30 minutes delay - it’s not like a football match where the result might pop up on a newsfeed or a noisy neighbour gives the game away. Looking forward to a good tournament.

It looks as though Shreyas Royal missed the GM norm by half a point then, which is extremely unlucky, as he looked to be on top for a lot of that last game.ThomasEvans wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2023 8:35 pmA win against a 2558+ will do it.LawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2023 6:36 pmA draw today so hopefully he has a chance tomorrow and gets white.

Re: Isle Of Man International (Fide Grand Swiss)
I am not sure the Swiss gambit works over 11 rounds, in the same way it sometimes does over 6 rounds, Vidit still came up against many of the top contenders. Curious is that most of the top finishers - the top two, the 5 players on 7.5 points, and 4 out of the 6 players on 7 points - had 6 whites. I...

Re: Isle Of Man International (Fide Grand Swiss)
Thanks Geoff. Yes, I remember those matches, also the World Cup when Scotland needed to beat Holland by 3 goals to (maybe) go through, and that Archie Gemmel goal, but it wasn’t to be. Back when England fans would cheer for Scotland - not sure Scots have ever cheered for England though! Back to the ...

Re: Isle Of Man International (Fide Grand Swiss)
Interesting tournament, with everything still to play for. One thing which strikes me as slightly strange, from a sporting point of view, is that a player who has already qualified for the candidates can have a big influence on who gets the places from this event. That might be by agreeing a quick d...

Re: October 2023 ECF AGM
Well, yes, it's obvious that part of the membership subscriptions goes towards the cost of collecting those subscriptions, in much the same way as part of the money collected by HMG in income tax (or any other tax) goes towards the cost of collecting that tax. As for "charged back to individual dir...

Re: British Championship 2023
In other news, Keith recovered from his reverse in round 2 to win the over 50s. As for the over 65s, just following chess24 leaves me confused, looking at the games being shown. I feel quite sure that Terry Chapman has 6/7, but am confident of little else. Chess-Results shows Chapman losing by defa...

Re: British Championship 2023
I have been watching in Lichess and the Fernandez- Jones game seems to be several moves behind - 17 Nf3 just played, compared with chess.com 23 d5 just played. It does look as though Jones could win, whichever platform it is on.

Re: British Championship 2023
Back to the present, predictions for today’s final round: Adams (6.5) Willow (5.5) 1-0 Fernandez (6) Jones (5.5) 1-0 Han (5.5) Grieve (5.5) 0-1 Grieve has form for winning a big last round game, so I have stuck my neck out there. The alternative would see 3 draws, but I think some long fights are po...

Thanks for these updates, John. Alongside the goings on in Leicester, it’s been a good week for us online chess addicts. +6 is a tremendous score by Conor Murphy.
