Re: Latest ECF Covid-19 Guidance

I consider the greatest risk is that we typically place opponents less than 1m apart, which is directly against Government / NHS guidance - irrespective of mitigations (masks, ventilation etc). I'd be interested to know how Barrow CC is addressing this. I am a Chemical Process Safety professional -...

Re: List of players

The complete and up-to-date list of current ECF members and supporters is in the [password-protected] organisers area of the ECF website but I don't think [although I stand to be corrected] that set of data links up with pairing software. However it's useful for checking the status of anyone who cla...

Re: Northumbria Masters, 26-30 August, 2021

What makes you think the law needs to be changed for this purpose? My understanding is that discrimination is lawful as long as it isn't done on the basis of certain characteristics (race, sex etc), and vaccination status isn't currently one of them. I'm not a lawyer but presumably it could be argu...

Re: Northumbria Masters, 26-30 August, 2021

I was still under the impression that the law hasn’t been changed yet to demand vaccination status as a means of entry, and by doing so can be construed as discriminatory What makes you think the law needs to be changed for this purpose? My understanding is that discrimination is lawful as long as ...

Re: Cheating in chess

I might dodge that question slightly. In a fair society, someone should know exactly what they are being accused of and the evidence against them. I would expect this to be the case in a FIDE, ECF or Chess Scotland event. In private events I would hope that was the case too but there the organiser ...

Re: Cheating in chess

Hi Roger, As someone who had some input into this document can I firstly state the obvious. This is advice for arbiters . If there is no arbiter present then the advice cannot be implemented. The official FIDE form requires a FIN. Obviously, if the person is not registered with FIDE this makes thin...

Re: Cheating in chess

I think FIDE should consult a master plumber with regard to the Osmak case. It is clearly utter ballcocks. I was sorry to read a few pages ago about Lorin D'Costa's mishap, which I was previously unaware of. It is also clearly absurd, paranoid and evidence of a nasty mind that anyone would use what...

You've missed the bolded bit in the quote.
Well, yes, I'll grant you that it's always useful knowing who's alive and who's dead. But that doesn't seem to be the main purpose of any exercise such as that proposed.

Re: Cheating in chess

Hi SImon, I'm going to use a computer to do my post for me, 20 a day in various threads. They will have to create an algorithm to catch me. Hi Geoff. Posting 20 a day will still take you a number of decades before you catch up with Roger De C. What's the latest scores for posting. I thought you mig...

Re: Chess clubs by size

Can someone construct a list of chess clubs ordered by size? Some constraints: a) the members should have played a rated game for the club at least once within the last three years b) for bona fide members of more than one club, count them as (a) full members or (b) pro-rata members c) include onli...

Re: COVid19-What's wrong with UK?

Latest from Barnard Castle's least favourite visitor Mr Cummings continues that he is "happy for No 10 to publish every email I received and sent July 2019-November 2020". He also calls for an "urgent parliamentary inquiry into the government's conduct over the Covid crisis", adding that he thinks ...

Re: May 2021 ECF Rating List

Incidentally, I wouldn't want it thought that my comments are intended as criticism of how the new rating system operates. To be able to play games on 26 April and have them ECF-rated in the first few hours of May is something of which, not so long ago, we could only have dreamed. In my opinion, the...

Re: Carlsen's ranking of world champions

Well Professor Elo gave us some help. So genius does just mean being very good at something? Here is an idea then, "A genius is someone whose ability is such that it cannot be sensibly measured on an existing scale" Here is a little anecdote from one of the first times I met someone who I think the...

Re: May 2021 ECF Rating List

The LMS only sends to the rating system once per month at the moment. Which would be why our games on 28 and 29 April are not yet on the rating list. Can confirm this - our games on 29 March were also held over for a month. Malcolm later advised me that the LMS submits to the rating system on the m...

Re: May 2021 ECF Rating List

Roger, I think the rating database has problems presenting your tournament because you had multiple games by the same player in each round at https://ecflms.org.uk/lms/node/66881 At least, I hope that is the cause. I am using the same 'unstructured' setting but using lots of rounds https://ecflms.o...
