Re: Media comments on chess

2 links from a recent article by Leonard Barden. Spassky's son (also Boris), who doesn't play seriously, talking about his father. He looks a lot like his father, with his glasses there is also a resemblance to David McCallum. The elephant in the room is the acrimonious breakup of his parents' marria...

Lisa Lane

From another time. An immature Fischer claimed he could give knight odds to all women players. That wasn't true when he said it, certainly in the Soviet Union.

'The Commons needed to focus on the horror in Gaza. Instead this was a grubby game of political chess.'

(Actually a clear explanation of what happened on Wednesday).

How many chess pieces can capture one square diagonally?
Poor question. Are pawns considered to be pieces or not?
Went back to check wording in programme: ' How many different chess pieces can capture by moving one square diagonally'. Ian's point still applies.

Re: Without thinking about it too much... are you a bishop or a knight person?

Knight circuits can be difficult to follow.

From the endgame KB+P v K doesn't always win, while KN+P does, but 2 knights alone can't force checkmate.

I prefer Bishops unless I've just caught my opponent in a knight fork.

Re: OTB Freestyle / Fischer Random / Chess 960 in the UK

Slight tangent. Watched a video of the players in the 'freestyle' GOAT tournament (https://youtu.be/eU_oCJUthN0?si=pAgid7Wm-HnPJ6jw), there seemed a few questions about castling (I couldn't follow all the comments), suggesting even these players were not 100% clear on every aspect of the rules conce...

Opened link in an 'incognito' tab on phone and it could all be read. I have pm'ed it to Geoff as I think it's too long to paste here. I trie...

Nice poem. Can I ask if you composed that yourself, Roland, or if the reference to "Bard of Google" is a reference I am missing a subtle meaning of? (I dread to think what ChatGPT would come up with.) Christopher, no, this is produced by Google's Bard ( https://bard.google.com/ ), which works very ...
