Re: Switching over to the Sicilian Kan (?!) ?

Well, it could be worse I suppose. I just don't want to learn copious amounts of opening theory.

Re: Music from the 80s

There's a lot of good music from the 80s but also a lot of cheesy rubbish. The song that makes me laugh the most is the Spitting Image song 'Never met a nice South African'. That was pretty funny.

Re: Switching over to the Sicilian Kan (?!) ?

I think you can lose the game in the opening in the Najdorf, which I don't think you can with the Kan.

Re: The English Language

I just noticed that Navara lost in eight moves and commentated that 2700 players should not lose in less than ten moves but I should have said fewer than, shouldn't I?

Re: Switching over to the Sicilian Kan (?!) ?

Yes, it seems like in all Sicilians black can choose where to put his minor pieces, which in itself lends itself to a lot of theory in some variations, and in others a more systemic approach. The Kan seems less theory dependent and mostly centres around not being steamrollered by white playing e5 to...

Re: Switching over to the Sicilian Kan (?!) ?

I've never really taken to hedgehog structures but they do seem to have their merits. I don't mind conceding space if it means flexibility is granted. The reason I gave up the French is you are playing around a pawn chain and that can become a bit tiresome after a while.

Yes, that's the quoted answer. Not easy at first.

There is a clue in the position I think.

Re: Two puzzles.

Yes, white recaptures with en passant, winning the game. The second one is hard and relates to a move which (technically) has four parts.

Two puzzles.

I have to admit I was stumped by both, just not able to think outside the box I guess.

On the left, white to mate without making a move!
On the right, mate in a quarter of a move!
Please post the solutions if you have found them ( I know I couldn't).

Re: Switching over to the Sicilian Kan (?!) ?

Thanks. I'm trying to work out how different it is from the Najdorf. It seems that playing ...e6 instead of ...d6 changes the position considerably.

It's hard to guess what the ratings of these players are.

Re: Switching over to the Sicilian Kan (?!) ?

Yes, I forgot one of them is a capture. After 5. Nc3 black usually plays Qc7, which makes me think development is lacking, which is bound to hurt at some point? It seems very solid, and I did notice even Caruana was caught out by Giri from an early e6 and a position broadly similar to the Kan. It do...

I took two pencils to the Polling Station today.

When it was time to vote I could not decide which one to use : 2B or not 2B?

(A tribute to Geoff C.)
Did you arrive with plenty of lead in your pencil? :D :D :D
