Re: Media comments on chess
An interview in The Guardian with the musician Moby You know, you’re asking me to open up such a can of worms. It reminds me of my favourite chess move, which my uncle taught me, where you move your knight so that it puts the king in check but also is going to take the castle.” This is known as a f...

Re: Media comments on chess
By "the first film" in this instance do you mean the late 1960s original? I'm sure he does mean the film released on 12 April 1968. 53 years ago, exactly to the day. I thought some of the recent Planet of the Apes films were excellent so disagree with Geoff there but totally agree that the original...

Re: Cheating in chess
I've reported a couple of people for losing a thousand or so points by throwing game after game in less than 10 moves, immediately prior to a tournament in which they then play normally. Lichess seems to be ok with this rather ridiculous practice. Unfortunately I have to agree with you. In one of m...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
What date is it today? We've not heard from the Sniper since the end of January. I believe he was building extra wings on Troll Prison to welcome new inmates. It was getting a bit crowded. I suspect that you can forget about Charlie arranging anything in Malta. This was 5 hours ago on FB: "After ca...

but perhaps something will be organised before then. If he's resolved his differences with the local Malta federation, perhaps the Sniper will pop up with something. We've not heard from the Sniper since the end of January. I believe he was building extra wings on Troll Prison to welcome new inmate...

Re: Cheating in chess
Peter Doggers has a very good article summarising the positions on chess.com https://www.chess.com/news/view/fide-world-university-chess-championship-cheating-iulia-osmak David Cordover is still not pulling any punches Yes very comprehensive article and a real problem for Osmak as in theory she cou...

Yulia Osmak with an hour long video (not in English) analysing her games which would be useful to compare with the data against her.

Re: Cheating in chess
Another chess cheating scandal as 20 players are disqualified from the FIDE World Online University Championships, which uses the Tornelo playing platform, though the Fair Play Panel are not officially saying it was cheating they were disqualified for. The winner of the Women's rapid, Iulija Osmak, ...

Re: The ACO is back!
I do think ACO should make it clear in their regulations and website that their events are not FIDE-rated. They are parasitical on the FIDE (and national) rating systems in that they divide their congresses into rating bands which they expect entrants to be honest in observing. The ACO do refer to ...

Re: Obscure International OTB Events Going Ahead in 2021
I'm not sure the Italians would consider this an obscure event. But I think we should keep the thread going until the Scottish Championship is announced so we can troll Alex. Alex scares me too much. He looks and sounds like Prince Vultan from Flash Gordon. You never see them together do you? https...

Re: 2021 World Cup
Peter Doggers article on FIDE's approval of the Hybrid format for the World Cup qualifiers. Discussion on Dvorkovich's concern as to whether norms and ratings should be included. Not too shabby 30,000-euro prize fund supported by the FIDE Continental Development Fund.

2021 World Cup
A FIDE press release issued on March 6th stated that FIDE had approved proposals from the four Continental Federations related to their qualification structures for the next FIDE World Cup to be held in July 2021. "As the epidemical situation remains complicated all over the World, a significant num...

The chief arbiter, Pavel Vortruba, at Wijk aan Zee wasn't happy with the way he was portrayed by the media and states that the video footage did not tell the full story of what happened. Here is his account of what happened off camera.

Re: 2021 Hybrid Cities Cup
Clearly Hybrid Chess is not for everybody as Viktor Moskalenko comments on FB on the tournament: Is there a link? I have never got to grips with FB. I can't see how to link the page, probably a Friend request is the only way to access it. Barcelona won it in the end results . Another player Fernand...

Re: 2021 Hybrid Cities Cup
Clearly Hybrid Chess is not for everybody as Viktor Moskalenko comments on FB on the tournament: "Is 'Hybrid Chess' a joke or nonsense? I'll just describe my day. On Saturday, February 20, 2021, for the first time in history, we have played two rounds in the so-called FIDE - hybrid chess. But I can'...
