Re: Candidates Tournament 2020

Nepo won't be able to play under the Russian flag in his match versus Carlsen, due to the WADA ban on Russia for international sporting competitions. Peter Doggers article here . Yesterday I was looking on the FIDE calendar to see what tournaments might be happening in the next couple of years and w...

Re: Czech Tour 2021

On Kevin's link it states on the photo that the "chess part" is complete and by that it looks like they mean the entry form and calendar of events which are listed here . As you can see they have a lot of events lined up including a RainDropChess Open. However, the "game part" will only be updated i...

Re: Candidates Tournament 2020

Nepo and Carlsen have been rivals for longer than I thought. Here is a stunning 4 minute video with Magnus being interviewed by David Howell which demonstrates just how phenomenal his memory is.

Re: Candidates Tournament 2020

Off topic, but why was Curacao chosen as venue in 1962? I could only find this article which is a great read involving Benko giving Fischer a slap! The relevant para is: "Going back to 1956 the chess community in Curacao was small, about 150 members, but they wanted to organize the candidates tourn...

Re: Candidates Tournament 2020

You would think that playing a game of chess would not be so complicated but I saw the following from Andy Howie on social media: Measures in place: ✔️Badge Zone access, ✔️Airport scanner at entrance to the playing hall, ✔️ Non-linear Scanner, ✔️Thermal Imaging, ✔️Signal Acquisition and Identificati...

Re: Events in 2021

South Lakes Congress is off for 2021, because the venue (Kendal Leisure Centre) is going to be unavailable until the end of the year. The better news is that it has already been booked for the tournament to return in mid 2022 :) Just some more detail on Matt's post from the organisers: "The good ne...

Re: Media comments on chess

An interview in The Guardian with the musician Moby You know, you’re asking me to open up such a can of worms. It reminds me of my favourite chess move, which my uncle taught me, where you move your knight so that it puts the king in check but also is going to take the castle.” This is known as a f...

Re: Media comments on chess

By "the first film" in this instance do you mean the late 1960s original? I'm sure he does mean the film released on 12 April 1968. 53 years ago, exactly to the day. I thought some of the recent Planet of the Apes films were excellent so disagree with Geoff there but totally agree that the original...

Re: Cheating in chess

I've reported a couple of people for losing a thousand or so points by throwing game after game in less than 10 moves, immediately prior to a tournament in which they then play normally. Lichess seems to be ok with this rather ridiculous practice. Unfortunately I have to agree with you. In one of m...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

What date is it today? We've not heard from the Sniper since the end of January. I believe he was building extra wings on Troll Prison to welcome new inmates. It was getting a bit crowded. I suspect that you can forget about Charlie arranging anything in Malta. This was 5 hours ago on FB: "After ca...

but perhaps something will be organised before then. If he's resolved his differences with the local Malta federation, perhaps the Sniper will pop up with something. Re: Cheating in chess

Peter Doggers has a very good article summarising the positions on chess.com https://www.chess.com/news/view/fide-world-university-chess-championship-cheating-iulia-osmak David Cordover is still not pulling any punches Yes very comprehensive article and a real problem for Osmak as in theory she cou...

Re: Cheating in chess

Another chess cheating scandal as 20 players are disqualified from the FIDE World Online University Championships, which uses the Tornelo playing platform, though the Fair Play Panel are not officially saying it was cheating they were disqualified for. The winner of the Women's rapid, Iulija Osmak, ...
