Re: Ray Gamble

I've updated the BritBase collection of Raymond Gamble's games to include a batch of five games sent to me by Ken Norman, for which many thanks...

Re: Chess history trivia

[The actual game is not on that blog, or my browser is not displaying it. Can anyone post it or link to it? Maybe the problem as well, though that might be more difficult to find.] The game doesn't appear in my browser either (it's quite an old web page - at a guess, it probably used some (Java?) s...

Re: European Team Championship November 2023

The England women's team might be about to snatch a match victory...

Here the Spanish player Sabina Vega Gutierrez chose the wrong square for her king and with best play Lan Yao can now reach a draw after being in a bad position since about move 20.

Re: European Team Championship November 2023

(Move transmission messed up in Mickey's game.) Yes, I also noticed that lichess messed up the move transmission of the Bok-Adams game, but chess.com got it right. Just in case anyone following on lichess was wondering, the moves were as follows: [Event "Euro Team Ch"] [Site "Budva"] [Date "2023.11...

Re: Ray Gamble

That's sad news. I checked my BritBase database and found there were 236 of his games there, over sixty years. Here's a link to a hastily-generated PGN file of them... https://www.saund.org.uk/britbase/pgn/gamble.pgn Mega Database 2022 has fewer in total but amongst them are some from events which ...

Re: European Team Championship November 2023

2-2 and 2-2 - very amusing that, after being the likeliest loser, Mickey ended up being England's saviour. What an amazing player he is. An entertaining afternoon's chess.

Re: European Team Championship November 2023

England v Croatia is still very close but Mickey has definitely turned his game right round. Ravi's lined up a fighting defence based on giving up R for N and securing a perpetual, and requires some precise play from his opponent. A 2½-1½ win is on the cards though 2-2 is perhaps favourite.

Re: European Team Championship November 2023

Mai Narva has just blundered horribly so it looks like Jovanka is going to win.

Re: European Team Championship November 2023

The England's women's match could hinge on the board four game between Triin Narva and Katarzyna Toma. The Estonian player is winning but only if she finds the right moves and she appears to be in desperate time control. She is the younger sister of Mai Narva who is playing Jovanka Houska on board o...

Re: European Team Championship November 2023

I'm starting to like Mickey's position. Yes, similar to the oft-quoted commentator's curse, as soon as I mentioned Mickey was doing poorly, Black played the nonsensical 25...Qg6, and later buried his queen on h7. Incomprehensible. I still don't like Mickey's position much after 30 Qg4 but it's cert...

Re: European Team Championship November 2023

I tend to watch live chess via Lichess.org, which seems very good to me, but sometimes I prefer to use their live feed (available via their 'Download All Games' button) to watch using HIARCS Chess Explorer's Open URL feature, which allows better control of which game to follow, choice of engine, etc...

Re: Junior squad/Kasparov simul in 1986

The source for the Carr game was Leonard's Guardian column of 26 May 1984... THERE were some odd happenings, and also another display of world champion Karpov’s stamina, in the Russian simultaneous exhibitions which followed the Phillips & Drew GLC international at County Hall, Two years ago Karpov ...

Re: Junior squad/Kasparov simul in 1986

The Carr game is actually from the 1984 simul, not 1982, as stated in the Guardian report quoted above. Karpov awarded it the Lloyds Bank Trophy after some hesitation and nudging from me. Yes, you're quite right, Leonard, my mistake. Here is the Carr game again, now with the correct date... [Event ...

Here's the Garwood game, from Leonard Barden's column in the Guardian, 24 April 1982...
