Re: ECF meeting reports
Am I right in thinking that the typical rated restricted congress that I may enter (I am 1550 rated) will now be FIDE rated as well as ECF rated.

Question about free junior silver membership
There is a child at our chess club who is 17, who turns 18 later this school year. The ECF website says: "Junior memberships are open to all players aged under 18 on 31st August of the year that membership is taken out." As we are now on Tuesday 6th September 2022, and the chess year runs from 1st S...

Re: MCCU county championships OTB 2021/22
Does anyone else think the Under 1650 competition should be 12 players to bring it into line with what the under 120 competition would have been, prior to the grades being changed?

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
First, I hope everyone and their families are fit, healthy and safe during this time.
I do not know if it is just myself that has this uneasy feeling, that there seems to be a mad rush to return to competitive action. Whereas the focus SHOULD be on rebuilding chess clubs in general.

Re: The Chess Scene
The chess scene I thought was a nice book, full of information about how to run a junior chess club, whilst taking a light hearted look at some of Alan's adventures on the chess circuit, and a view of some of Alan's best games.

Italian Opening
Hello everyone First of all, I hope everyone and their families are fit, healthy and safe during this time. Our chess club has reopened, and whilst we are not playing any competitive matches (and we are restricted to the government's rule of six) we thought we would use this opportunity to look at v...

Re: Andrew P Davies 1960 - 2020
I have updated the Brewood Chess Circle website with two updates regarding Andrew Davies death. The first one is the statement that Robert Milner (President of the Staffordshire Chess Association,) and Traci Whitfield (Secretary for junior chess for the Staffordshire Chess Association,) had realised...

Re: Andrew P Davies 1960 - 2020
Well I am the chairman of Brewood Chess Circle. No chess club, however good its players are, can function without a club secretary. I know Brewood Chess Circle is a very good chess club to go to, but only because we had a very good club secretary. Andrew will be very sadly missed. On a personal note...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
So in answer to my initial question, what should chess clubs do if their local area is in tier 1, tier 2, or tier 3, did the ECF ever publish any specific guidance about what a chess club should do, if their local area is under each of these tiers. And if so where is it. Prime Minster Boris Johnson ...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
What is the general consensus about what chess clubs should do if their local area is in tier 1, tier 2, or tier 3. Edited to add - I had already looked on the ECF website and can not find any guidance anywhere. The latest stories on the ECF website are October online ratings are out HM Government C...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
The English Bridge Union say the new measures remove any doubt that face to face bridge competitions can return and say it’s not possible at this time. European Bridge Union competitions will also be cancelled. They await suitable changes being made in the future before any clubs should reopen; htt...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
That is producing a contrast with the UK, where nothing over the board seems to be planned for at least several months. Isn't it still illegal in the UK to hold indoor "meetings" involving multiple households? I'm wondering whether pubs, particularly those with outdoor seating will be configured to...

Re: Membership Renewal
The question I would have is what benefit would you actually get for your money from renewing the membership. Please don't tell me that I can enter ECF online tournaments. I can enter online tournaments, without the benefit of my ECF membership and did so plenty of times, before I decided that I wan...
