Re: Euro 21

I think Paolo is right. Although if he has happened to read any Italian press, they might not be the most neutral. Italian press is obviously not to be trusted on the subject, but it was not only them. This is a good summary in English: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/jul/08/englands-pena...

Re: Euro 21

Speaking to friends in the Czech Republic and Germany, we appear to have got a bad press over the laser pen incident and that few Italians will be at the final. They said most people are supporting Italy and that England is not popular. From what I read in non English press, reaching the final than...

Re: Cheating in chess

It's a piece about covid testing, but the application of Bayes's Theorem seems also relevant to the question of how many false positives are being detected by the cheat finder methods. As a summary, the smaller the proportion of people using engine assistance/ having covid, the greater the relative...

According to chess.com, "the rate of false positives detected by our algorithm is intentional."

Does anyone know what this rate is, and what we think this rate should be?
How can they possibly know (or even estimate) the rate of false positives?

Re: Cheating in chess

>The comment in brackets seems to me extremely poorly worded. I agree; I should not have said 'of course'. However, the investigating committee will be operating in English because that is the lingua franca of the FPC. It is true that in theory a non-English speaking player could be interviewed liv...

In general, it is always useful to interview the player (if they are reasonably fluent in English, of course).
The comment in brackets seems to me extremely poorly worded.

Re: Cheating in chess

The argument put forward by the FPL Secretary at last year's FIDE Online Congress ( open to all but sadly not on record ) was that Ken Regan's statistical work is so far ahead of its time - he did actually namecheck Einstein by way of comparison - that nobody else would be capable of understanding ...

Re: General Reference Books for Chess Openings

Not sure if anyone mentioned already "Fundamental Chess Openings" by Paul van der Sterren from 2009. https://www.amazon.co.uk/FCO-Fundamental-Paul-van-Sterren/dp/1906454132 It provides textual description of each main opening/defense, including an historical perspective how opening theory evolved. V...

I'm one of those that can't get on the www.chessgames.com site... but only having problem from my home broadband connection with British Telecom. Connecting using my Vodafone mobile is ok. I suspect it might be an issue with the BT network. Questions: - is anyone on a BT Broadband service able to co...

Re: A Former Loophole-The “Legal” Triple Check

The old versions of the FIDE rules of chess said that, regarding check, “The king is in check when the square it occupies is attacked by one or two of the opponent’s pieces.” This left an a potentional ambiguity-if the king was left attacked by three pieces then it was not in technically in check-i...

Re: COVid19-What's wrong with UK?

Putting aside for a moment the serious issues which concern us all,  this thread has become an amusing study in human psychology: This thread?! I thought the whole forum was created by Carl with the sole purpose of gathering data for his psychology degree and his final dissertation about the behavi...

Re: Which is your preferred site for following the Candidates?

I like the followchess site and mobile app: https://live.followchess.com/#!fide-candidates-2020 Very tidy games display and pointers to the live video commentaries. The chess24 live video is the most interesting, with a lot of top commentators; I'd rather watch that straight from youtube rather than...
