Re: Cheating in chess

So, I'm counting myself out. (Which I'm sure will please some greatly but it pleases me more.) Carry on pleasi...

I've heard of the theory of everything...
This discussion has now begun to plumb the depths of the theory of nothing.
Nothing ventured and nothing gained.

Breaking news -
The Woodward & Bernstein of chess are back in tandem!! Like a pair of bloodhounds they sniff out where the bones are buried. Unlike other canines they never bury any bones themselves. Funny that.

The trouble is - the USA and, to some extent, Canada are more egalitarian societies with less deference and more "attitude".
Some allowance should be made for that by Brits & Europeans.

Just finished "Failures of State" by Sunday Times journalists Jonathan Calvert & George Arbuthnott. 400 pages of investigative journalism cataloguing the utter uselessness of Boris Johnson and his government's handling of the pandemic. Essential reading for anyone who still has any doubts whatsoeve...

Re: The English Language
According to David Crystal the principle reason why starting sentences with a conjunction because distasteful was playground banter became a great annoyance. Dropping conjunctions at the start of sentences was one of many minor changes. Crystal claims teachers invoked that change for the wrong reas...

Re: Cheating in chess
Can someone explain to me why anyone cares what someone's lichess rating is? The reasons why some people manipulate their OTB and/or CC grades and ratings have been gone into previously on this forum. Online ratings are subject to the same thing but are more visible and can be manipulated at a far ...

Re: Improving chess?
Iran has recently produced some very high-class young players so must have been doing something right. Here the emphasis has gone from quality to quantity and less high-class juniors have appeared recently. However, due to a project called "Chess in Schools" more youngsters are playing chess here th...

Re: The English Language
What does 'And it is' mean in: Iceland feels like a mystical land of stunning beauty. And it is... It is a conjunction that serves to connect the two sentences. The second sentence confirms that "Iceland is a land of stunning beauty". NB: There was a time when school teachers of English in the UK t...

An awful lot of it is fluff... According to you "Prince" Kasperski is not even true blue. There have been plenty of high crimes going on elsewhere in real royal circles across the globe rather than minor misdemeanours. Do tell if you ever get a reply to your second missive to Messrs Poole Waterfield.

No danger of that, Nick, I am the oldest surviving member of my immediate family.

Re: Cheating in chess
I'd caution against any belief that all 7- and 8-year-olds are "tyros" at chess - but that doesn't mean they fully understand complicated rules. You are in danger of arguing against yourself there, Roger. Roget, you have pointed out on here a sad lack of parental reponsibility in some cases and at ...
