Re: Remembering BH Wood MSc FCS OBE (13-vii-1909 04-iv-1989)
Then one issue came with an insert, "To Our Readers", which had clearly been put into the envelopes out of sight of his now unionised staff. Unless my memory is at fault, BH described one of his employees, "G", as a communist agitator. I would be interested to know whether anyone here still has a c...

Re: Remembering BH Wood MSc FCS OBE (13-vii-1909 04-iv-1989)
Long time subscribers will remember a period when more than one issue of CHESS contained a reference to its having been delayed by industrial action. Then one issue came with an insert, "To Our Readers", which had clearly been put into the envelopes out of sight of his now unionised staff. Unless m...

No chess theme, though at one point she is seen studying a position on a chess board. (I actually enjoyed that film mo...

Re: Chess on TV
Well spotted Reg, Do you think you could rip out the page and sent it to me. :D Apparently, if I recall, it is MCO 11 but not in MC0 10. Something rings a bell about MCO 13 and a doomed quest about not being able to find the quoted game. I'll check my blogs. Actually I've just noticed it is not the...

Re: Chess on TV
When I found out MCO 9 finished a variation with an 'unclear' symbol but was actually mate in two. The Quest was on. Interestingly, the same error is in MCO 11, the only difference being that the 9...N-R3 line has been relegated to a footnote. And it only cost me £3-75! (though that was over 40 yea...

As Alex said, it also applied to other employers. It probably has its roots in the marriage bar which persisted in some cases until the 1960s.John Upham wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 1:20 pmThanks Alex. I assumed that this was the case.

When OTB chess resumes, I think these should become compulsory for Blitz tournaments! https://chess.us9.list-manage.com/track ... 619c478ac0

Re: To whom is she referring?
I believe Rublevsky (in later life) has form when it comes to upsetting women, i.e. the Russian women's team when he was their captain (specifically the Kosintseva sisters) although I suppose he would hardly be considered as 'young' at the time of that Olympiad.

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
More seriously, given the profile of the people living at the venue, I wouldn't be surprised if they and their carers will all be vaccinated (including second dose) in the next couple of months. If they are indeed vaccinated, a chess tournament will present no risk to them. That's not correct becau...

Suckling. (assuming you mean they drink only milk). It's a bit archaic though, and is more commonly used with reference to animals, e.g. 'suckling pig'.soheil_hooshdaran wrote: ↑Tue Feb 16, 2021 9:29 amWhat do you call babies who still drink milk?
