Re: British Championship Congress 2021

We should be showing our appreciation for those who will be giving up many hours of there time, for little or no reward, to put on the British Online Championships in August and the OTB British Championship events in October. I made a small contribution to the last British Online Championships and ...

Re: James Bond Themes

I think Juga Di Prima has the ideal style for a James Bond theme song. Take a listen and see what you think: https://youtu.be/21QpsK7LRM4

Re: Unofficial British Bullet and Blitz Senior Championships 28th February 2021

If you were again in that situation, I would be willing in principle to run the event for you on a voluntary basis, so long as it was again described as unofficial. Thanks - appreciated 🙂 You could of course ask the ECF to advertise it (saying it will clearly be an unofficial event), and (A) they m...

Re: Unofficial British Bullet and Blitz Senior Championships 28th February 2021

I would also just add that we were at two disadvantages by comparison with the ECF 'official' online championships: 1) we operated with a budget of £zero, and 2) we lacked the advertising capacity of the Federation. Given these constraints, I hope that a combined turnout of 30 entrants will lead to ...

Re: Unofficial British Bullet and Blitz Senior Championships 28th February 2021

Thanks David, both for your suggestions and for supporting the event. Another option, were we not to have access to the resources you referred to ( eg an arbiter with the 'necessary privileges' along with the spare time and inclination), would be to run the event as an 'Arena' tournament. I play in ...

Re: Unofficial British Bullet and Blitz Senior Championships 28th February 2021

Thanks again Jack. These type of events are wonderful for catching up with friends and opponents from 40+ years ago. Eg here, as well as playing Kevin in the last round, I played Loz Cooper, Jim PLaskett, Andrew Stone , Graham Waddingham and John Sharp. Those last two are friends against whom I was ...

As is customary with Chess.com, you can only enter within an hour of kick-off, which means entries are now being accepted!

Thanks to International Arbiter Jack Rudd for putting this on for us.

Re: H.E.Atkins

In terms of natural ability and training a sub 4 mile must to this day be in the same ballpark of difficulty as becoming a GM. Maybe a bit higher than GM even, if we benchmark the best middle distance runner in 1954 to the best chess player, Smyslov. I did not remember this thread and am surprised ...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

None of you seems to mention the First Saturday round robin tournaments in Budapest. They have been proceeding on schedule. There is never any scheduled for January. Quite right, Stewart, and what is more Keith Arkell played in a First Saturday two months or so ago, announcing it advance here and w...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Czech Airlines have just cancelled my flights for Pardubice for covid-19 reasons. (Chess) Life Not Returning To Normal. I'm flying with my friend at 2.30 on Sunday from Luton Airport with Easy Jet, Tim. Someone (apologies but I forget who) said elsewhere that Brits aren't allowed into Hungary. I in...

Re: Loz Cooper's 50th Birthday Blitz

Correct. Peter Svidler was also in the field. It's not very often I can boast playing Mathew Sadler ( loss) Marcus Harvey ( draw), Ameer Ghasi ( draw), Jonah Willow (draw) , Loz Cooper ( win) and Shreyas Royal ( win ) all in a row in online blitz, (and then find that my 6.5/9 is only enough for 4th ...

Re: 4NCL Online

As many of you don't appear to be on facebook I'm going to copy and paste a valuable piece Kenneth Regan wrote on my wall last night: 'The one thing I'll fix is that there may not be any context in which it is right to say my confidence levels are higher than those of Lichess. What is true is that t...
