Re: Proposed reorganisation

One possible problematic issue for the one off 32 team format - what to do about the rule in relation to minimum junior/female/male players? (assuming it isn’t scrapped for one season only).

Re: 4NCL On-Line Season 3

Why? Because, as blurted out last week by Neil Ferguson, a year ago they didn't know they could get away with it. Now they do. They didn't know if they could get away with it, even for an extremely dangerous virus that spreads like wildfire. There is a danger that if something like Swine Flu turns ...

There's an opportunity to do a reset on all of it, including whether travelling in the depths of winter should continue
Don't forget that from now on any health crisis, for instance a flu outbreak, is likely to be met by some form of lockdown.
Why?

Feb newsletter received 11th Feb. Invites contributions for any obituaries of note. Clearly the previous practice of linking to the occasional posting on the ECForum isn't really an option at the moment.

Simon - feel free to announce whichever deaths you want, and however long ago they occurred (this one was Jan 2020 for the record). But really, I think you are stretching the limits to consider this sort of thing an "English connection" to the extent that i wouldn't bother trying to make one if you ...

Re: British Online Chess Championships 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021

Everyone is on the same zoom call, so you could watch you opponent or any of the other players, but I assume most players will just have the board on their screen. Interesting. I think i'd put my opponent on second screen. I wonder if players are more revealing in their reactions when playing onlin...

Re: British Online Chess Championships 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021

Under the "Zoom" arrangement do players get to see their opponents, or is it "arbiter access only"? In OTB chess the advantage of high rating doesn't just come from being the better player (obviously) but also often from the psychological impacts at the board. I could imagine some of that could be l...

Re: Chess and the Blue Laws

I don't know when the British Championship Congress first had Sunday play, 1970s probably, but Sunday play was already established for weekend tournaments. In the 1960s, for sure, there were 11 rounds - 6 [Monday to Saturday] in the first week, 5 [Monday to Friday] in the second. That has always be...

Whilst reading The English Chess Scene (Chapter 3 of Chess Secrets I Learned from the Masters , Edward Lasker, Hollis & Carter, 1952) on page 150 I found This is the first time I have encountered such an assertion. Can you shed light on this? From such limited basic research as is possible on the i...

Whilst reading The English Chess Scene (Chapter 3 of Chess Secrets I Learned from the Masters , Edward Lasker, Hollis & Carter, 1952) on page 150 I found On Saturdays we would play all afternoon an evening. On Sundays we had an enforced rest, because the English "blue laws" banned even chess on Sun...

Re: Cheating in chess

Am I right in thinking the individual concerned did not in fact start? I believe he tried to play his first game without turning Zoom on. And then following further claims about various technical issues was eventually defaulted. Was also paired in round 2 and opponent was subsequently given a walko...

Danny Gormally withdraws, cites cheating Is he complaining about the presence of players rumoured or confirmed to have been defaulted for engine use in previous events? That's another one for arbiters and organisers to chew over. if they accept entries from players of dubious repute, will that caus...
