In other news, MVL and Karjakin's opening choice suggests they're angling for an invitation to the London Chess Classic.
Yes, see they've already agreed a 35 move draw; maybe MVL likes tiebreaks

Re: 2021 World Cup

And he's still not the lowest-ranked player in the last 16 (that's currently 2608-rated Kacper Piorun, although Durarbayli and Ivić could still make it through the playoffs). Yes, he's beaten Ragger (2680) and J van Foreest (2701); next up is Bacrot or Ponkratov Tabatabaei held Harikrishna in 115 m...

Re: 2021 World Cup

Yes, looks that way, although I assume Magnus will win the tiebreak

I see Tabatabaei (2613) has knocked out Berkes (2673), Yu Yangyi (2705) and Harikrishna (2730) in successive rounds, which is impressive

Re: Start Date of Next Lockdown?

I've been told this afternoon that Bolton hospital has 1 Covid only ward, which is significantly less than previous peaks, despite case numbers here remaining reasonably high; I think Blackburn hospital, by contrast, is really struggling, and sending patients to other hospitals It's not the number o...

Re: ECF Pre-Season Regional County Challenge

Thanks David for your answer, and to Alex too I can see that we might end up at 10 if we need someone IT savvy as well as an Arbiter (not saying an Arbiter can't be both, but may be better to have someone else anyway) Reading the Regulations, it isn't straightforward Also, if it needs agreement with...

Re: ECF Pre-Season Regional County Challenge

Is this the event where teams can play hybrid i.e. all their players at 1 venue supervised by an arbiter? Matches can be played as Hybrids, but the standard format is an OTB match. Thanks David; do your objections apply to Hybrid matches too? If I have it right, it is 8 boards per team, so includin...

Re: Glorney 2021 online

Thanks, Wadih. I was hoping that at some point there would be a post relating to this year's chess, rather than previous cheating allegations. I'm sure we want to support all the England players, but that was the case last year and we were let down; I'd like to think that we have learned from what ...

Re: Glorney 2021 online

Games can be watched on chessbomb, and results are here If a player was defaulted last year, are they eligible to play this year? It would appear so I can't remember the row about this from last year (did the Dutch play as well?), but wasn't it established that Scotland had a no tolerance policy bu...

Re: Start Date of Next Lockdown?

Yes, Mick but they were so close together they should only be counted as one! Hi Michael Here in Bolton we seem to have had an almost continuous variety of lockdowns; not as bad as Leicester, but it is easy to forget we had restaurants shut here while they were open everywhere else, for example Tak...

Re: Dortmund Sparkassen + NC Masters

Pete Doggers The idea for this match originates from DeepMind's latest paper, co-written by Kramnik, in which the self-learning chess engine AlphaZero was used to explore the design of different variants of the game of chess with different sets of rules. One of the variants discussed—many of which ...
