Re: 31st World Seniors 2023 Wed 25th Oct 2023 - Sun 5th Nov 2023

This is ridiculous. In the Krasenkowa-Folkova game, White (with R+N v R) did win after all.
At move 145 Black blundered a mate in 3 but the opponent didn't see it.
So Black gave her another opportunity next move.

Re: 31st World Seniors 2023 Wed 25th Oct 2023 - Sun 5th Nov 2023

I saw that though I would prefer to have independent confirmation before updating my website, e.g., from someone who is actually there. It's not surprising that John is ahead of Ftacnik whose loss came to the Norwegian FM in round 4, so John was generally meeting people slightly ahead. It's curious ...

Re: 31st World Seniors 2023 Wed 25th Oct 2023 - Sun 5th Nov 2023

I did expect Mickey would win somehow. There have been quite a few developments and I've updated my site. The top board in the 50+ seems to have been agreed drawn as soon as they saw the Adams result so there will be a tiebreak between Atalik and Adams which, I suppose, can only be calculated at the...

Re: 31st World Seniors 2023 Wed 25th Oct 2023 - Sun 5th Nov 2023

My first progress report on round 11 is up. Campora may be in trouble against Ftacnik.
As yesterday, I get the impression that chess24 are showing the games with delay but there is no delay on Lichess.

Re: 31st World Seniors 2023 Wed 25th Oct 2023 - Sun 5th Nov 2023

I have now posted my report for the day and left it vague what happened at the end of the Atalik game. http://www.chessmail.com/seniors/Terrasini-Seniors2023.html As a matter of fact, though, Christopher is wrong to say that 37...Ba6 loses. It is still winning for Black so long as he meets Qb8+ by K...

Re: 31st World Seniors 2023 Wed 25th Oct 2023 - Sun 5th Nov 2023

I have added a few paragraphs to my report circa 1630 GMT. Full report late tonight. Meanwhile take a butchers at Nona's crazy imaginative game. She sac'd three pieces for six pawns. There have been some liquidations since. No idea whether this was sound.,. https://lichess.org/broadcast/fide-world-s...

Re: 31st World Seniors 2023 Wed 25th Oct 2023 - Sun 5th Nov 2023

Thanks for corrections. I just did a quick update to fix about Adams and correct a couple of typos. I hope I changed all the "today" references to "yesterday". It does look like we won't have any British world senior champion this year unless (like last year) there is an extraordinary combination of...

Of course if he could win the tournament he would become a GM.
Silver or bronze would get the IM title, which would be nice.
Yes it would; Terry just missed out in the tie at the European Seniors earlier this year.

Yes probably the strongest 65+ yet. I am not playing this year so can enjoy watching it more.

Re: 31st World Seniors 2023 Wed 25th Oct 2023 - Sun 5th Nov 2023

Is it normal for there to be such a disparity between the numbers in the 50+ (91 players) and the 65+ (155 players)? Or is that normal (e.g. more leisure time when retired, or 50+ players chosing the IoM tournament)? To answer that question first, yes every year since the age group split was introd...

...I see that he played in the Irish Senior Championships in both 2019 & 2020 (when he was 1st=) - Tim Harding played in the latter so may inform us what the qualification criteria were. The Irish Senior Championships are open to anyone but only IRL-registered players can win the titles. In 2019 Mo...

Re: Frank Boyd

Frank ... did qualify for the semi-final stage of the World CC Championship, which is quite an achievement. It is, although the uninitiated should be made aware that the stages used to be: Semi-final 3/4 final Final (3/4 final is now called Candidates) To qualify for an ICCF world championship semi...

Re: 2023 FIDE World Cup Sun 30th Jul 2023 - Thu 24th Aug 2023

You rarely see Caruana so thoroughly crushed as he was today by Abasov. Apparently White's 22nd and 23rd were inaccurate and Black would have been fine with 23...f5 but instead he blundered.
