Re: Chess history trivia
Thank you for finding the game, John. I wonder if it is possible to calculate whether the Black or White queen covered more squares of the chess board during the game? I am sure a computer program can be written to calculate that (or someone could manually count)? Anyway, I found it interesting that...

Re: Chess history trivia
Lovely report here:
HN Pillsbury vs. MR. Rhoda Bowles
That is from BCM in 1903 (the game was on 29 November 1902).
[The actual game is not on that blog, or my browser is not displaying it. Can anyone post it or link to it? Maybe the problem as well, though that might be more difficult to find.]

Re: Chess history trivia
In 1902, one of the world's top players contested a game in which the pieces were acted by real people. Who was the black queen? You appear to have found a non-Googlable question. It is not immediately obvious what they would have called it then. "Live chess" doesn't really work. I presume the pers...

Re: Very long games in weekend tournaments
Thank you, Martin. I am not sure you included the best defence by Black (maybe get the king to e8 somehow?), but I get your points now.

Danish-language report here:
https://nyheder.skak.dk/2023/11/24/im-s ... n-er-doed/
Worth reading in translation for the tribute from FM John Filip Rendboe. Also includes a win by Pedersen over Tony Miles (part of the GM norm achieved aged 16).

Re: Very long games in weekend tournaments
That said, if black hadn't played 160...Qc7 allowing b6 it wasn't obvious to me how he would break through. I was intrigued enough to ask SF - in between recommending eternal torture, it did seem to find a pretty solid plan. Q-> a3 with bishop in front, then Bc5 -> b6 to force a queen exchange on f...

Re: Very long games in weekend tournaments
It's maybe worth mentioning that the player of the black pieces was/will be nine years old this year. That is almost as bad as the time I promoted about 3 pawns to queens against David Howell when he was six (details of this story vary every time I tell it, as I cannot now remember what actually ha...

Re: Very long games in weekend tournaments
Peter Lalić's latest VERY long game, which I believe caused a delay in the rounds at this weekend's Coulsdon Congress: https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=2612620 In case anyone has not played through it yet, this involved Black's Bishop being shuffled from e8 to d7 and back while White m...

Re: Chess history trivia
Next question: British chess suffered two significant losses during the year 1925. One was Antony Guest at the age of 68. The other died at the age of 76. Who was he? The Tenacious Englishman. Born on 31 December 1848. Died 25 November 1925. Also called the “Invincible English Bulldog" (But do peop...

Re: European Team Championship November 2023
Chess.com says that the final will be held in-person in Toronto: https://www.chess.com/article/view/champions-chess-tour-2023 (you have to scroll down a bit). That is presumably why it is listed on 2700chess, which I think does not include on-line events but does include OTB rapid and blitz The fir...

Re: European Team Championship November 2023
The format of the Champions Chess Tour confuses me. https://championschesstour.com/format-regulations/ As far as I can tell, no classic time-control chess. Not sure why 2700.com are listing it. Maybe somewhere in there are some longplay time controls and games that count for FIDE ratings. Not sure ...

Re: European Team Championship November 2023
Carlsen also won the personal gold medal in this event, though - previously one of the few things he hadn't managed in competitive chess. (today is also the 10th anniversary of him becoming World Champion btw) Does he have any more classical chess due this calendar year? According to 2700 chess , h...

Re: European Team Championship November 2023
Chessbase report here: https://en.chessbase.com/post/european-team-championship-2023-r9 In this case, the decision as to whether Serbia or Germany would win gold depended on the result of the match between Iceland and Turkey, and the game between Gudmundur Kjartansson (Iceland) and Cemil Can Ali Mar...

Re: European Team Championship November 2023
Excellent news re: the win for England Women and the result by Lan Yao. In the Open, Germany have won their match. No idea what is happening in some of the Serbia-Greece games. EDIT: Greece set to claw back a 2-2 draw, so Germany will take the gold medals. EDIT: Sorry, got White and Black mixed up o...
