Kasparov and the machine -BBC documentary
Noticed this on the BBC Iplayer Some seasonal chess viewing (though it is up for nine months). Storyville - Kasparov and the Machine 'Man battles machine in the story of the chess master's controversial matches against IBM's Deep Blue computer. No one thought chess-playing computers would ever defea...

Re: Angela Eagle games
I have 3 games against Maria,but none against Angela. The 1st game I gave away a knight for no reason, not very interesting. The 2nd a sensible Colle [Event "Liverpool junior congress"] [Date "1978.3.??"] [Round "5"] [White "Eagle M"] [Black "Tasker M"] [Result "1/2-1/2"] 1. d4 Nf6 2. e3 e6 3. Bd3 b...

Re: Vaping
I'd agree with those statements, but saying 'vaping is harmful' alone is not too helpful. It can be argued that just about anything can be harmful even playing chess!
I agree vaping should not be allowed in the playing area.

Re: Vaping
People think that because these things consist of vegetable oils they are safe. This is incorrect, the main component of the liquid used (eliquid) is either Proplylene Glycol or Vegetable Glycol(+nicotine and flavouring) which are technically alcohols. Both have been used for a long time in items suc...

Re: Grading timetable (June/July 2013)
On sober reflection I suspect I'm talking nonsense about raising the absolute level of randomness. You can cluster a bad/nice set of results on the edge of your grading window whenever that falls :) You can use this effect to lock in a high grade. If you notice say your last 10 games from the previ...

Re: Division 3 2012-13
Perhaps another way to do the tie break for a swiss tournament, is to sum the opponents grades, or the average grade of the teams played. This seems to deal with one side playing stronger opponents. There is still the original question of what to do when some of the teams have withdrawn when calulati...

Re: Division 3 2012-13
OK, I assumed it was game points. Yes it is unclear what happens if a team(s) used to make the
sum of opponents match points has withdrawn, maybe the average of the opponents match points with the withdrawn teams removed, very confusing!

Re: Division 3 2012-13
Hackney have been playing for several years, but managed to keep a more stable side this year.
The table does not seem to be ordered by game points, according to it Guildford 3 have more GP
than Brown Jack and should come 4th and be promoted.

Re: Candidates Tournament 2013
I can understand the rigorous body checks before being allowed in the playing hall, but is it true that mobile phones (even switched off) are not allowed? I think phones and valuables are kept in some sort of store box in the cloakroom, but don't lose the key as I did, as they charge £5 for a repl...

Re: Candidates Tournament 2013
Went along today and got good value for the £20 with all games being long fighting draws (exept Svidler-Gelfand maybe which could of gone on longer but was still interesting). The commentary area was surprisingly informal, almost like an analysis area at a weekend tournament. There are about 10 tabl...

Re: That awkward moment at the chess board when...
This reminds me of a story told by Jonathan Hawkins in an internet interview, which I can't find at the moment. Two club players reach the following position, [SetUp "1"] [FEN "1KR5/P5r1/1k6/8/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 1"] White however has only a few seconds left to finish the game and promotes the pawn, as ...

Re: Chess and vaping
There was an item on "The One Show" last night about "vaping", where they got reaction to people "vaping" in a cafe. Many bystanders were agitated by it, the electronic cigarette glowed ocasionally and the users exhaled fumes, so it looked at first glance like an ordinary cigarette, except as one p...
