Re: Media comments on chess

Just watched Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (2011) which is really very poor indeed but I was glad to see that the precocious three-year-old ape Caesar demonstrates his intellectual progress by picking up a chess piece.

Can someone explain to me why anyone cares what someone's lichess rating is?
For the same reasons they may care what the FIDE or ECF or USCF or FEDA rating is, I guess

Re: End of an era

Forty years of clowns saying "nothing to see here" adds up to an awful lot of things to see.

Re: Cheating in chess

Just to note that drugs companies do not always release the results of trials involving their drugs, which has led to a number of scandals (e.g. relating to Seroxat).

Was Russias space programme science?
Or, say, the research of any private company prior to the publication of its results, which is to say it's research, and we don't know what else it is until we can see what it is.

Re: Cheating in chess

Oh for God's sake.

In science everybody has access to the data. That's how hypotheses can be verified or disproved, by the attempts of other people to examine the process and to replicate the results.

If it's private it isn't science.

Well if you ever get hold of it let me know, though do bear in mind it's a little before my time.

My main point is simply to bear in mind that sources are often partial and that any decent historian understands that the subject as well as the author of a document will have had a point of view.

Hansen on Nakamura

This ruck has apparently been going on for a while - I only caught up with it this evening - but if you listen to Eric Hansen a little past the forty-two minute mark you can hear him call Hikaru Nakamura: The most disliked lead [sic] grandmaster in the world among his peers because of a fifteen year...

Re: End of an era

Anyway why should The Brain Trust finally get round to removing the late Mr Schiller as a director on 6 or 7 April? Who knows, but for the record, I wrote to the accountants Poole Waterfield on 6 April, for the attention of David Gibbens, the charity's Independent Examiner. Dear Mr Gibbens I had cau...

Re: Cheating in chess

I'm not at all sure I follow that. Justin, I suggest the first question you might usefully consider is "Do the people behind the cheating allegations at Lichess and Chess.com honestly believe that their systems are anywhere near as infallible as they tell us?". If not, on a scale from 0 to 10, how ...
