Re: Archived footage

The earliest I have come across is the 1925 Soviet feature film, "Chess Fever", made at the time of the 1925 Moscow tournament and which features shots of most of the players in the tournament and of course a cameo performance by Capablanca.

Re: The Sicilian Defence with 4...e5!?

any of those in 978 games in ChessBase's Mega database? 4...e5!? seems an error I am not sure what you are asking, but here are some details of the 978 games that reach the position after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 e5: White's most-popular reply is 5.Nb3 (320 games). White's most-successful ...

Re: The Sicilian Defence with 4...e5!?

"I only posted it because I thought people might be interested in the opening rather than to seek assistance. I can delete it if you think I should." Might be best - just in case someone interprets it as seeking assistance. I am not sure if it is possible to delete a post if it has been replied to....

Re: The Sicilian Defence with 4...e5!?

"I don't think there any rules against it?" There are! Usually, (ICCF) you can use as many computers as you like, but you cannot ask another human what to do. Some organizations try to ban computers as well, but not very successfully. I only posted it because I thought people might be interested in...

Greetings Neville!

Strangely enough I saw you recently on a re-run of a well-known quiz show :

Yes, 15-1. I have never actually watched my appearance on the show (nor on Mastermind which I was on a few years ago)!

The Sicilian Defence with 4...e5!?

A correspondence game of mine has gone 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 e5!? Incredibly I cannot find any mention of this move in any of my openings books, whether general such as NCO or specifically on the Sicilian, despite it being a very natural move and not open to any obvious refutation. O...

Re: JM Soesan Coincidence

Joe Soesan was defnitely an Ilford player and a leading light of the club for several years and, I believe, secretary of the club at some point in the late forties and maybe afterwards, because I remember my dad, Don Twitchell, who played for the club at that time, referring to him on occasion as a ...

Re: Media comments on chess

Faulty quiz question on ITV's The Chase this evening? 'The Swiss Gambit is an opening move in which board game?' I have heard of it only in the context of losing in the first round of a Swiss System tournament with the hope of meeting easier opponents. Is there even a chess opening variation called...

Re: Queens Gambit and Netflix

Have just been listening to Malcolm Pein on Bob Mills show on Talk Radio discussing "The Queen's Gambit" and the authenticity of its portrayal of the chess scene, as well as chess matters in general. Quite interesting.

Re: Cheating in chess

"I think you check back against the user names of your opponents." Tournaments running on chess-results have the lichess user names removed after completion of the tournament. Presumably the idea being to make a process of cross-checking lichess suspensions against real names more difficult." It was...

Re: Cheating in chess

It didn't say who the supposed cheater was and It doesn't seem possible to discover that from anywhere on the website I think you check back against the user names of your opponents. This was just in ordinary blitz play, not in a tournament, but I went back through all the opponents from the last d...
