Re: Living in the Past: The Chiltern League
With LMS, instead of waiting for the 7/14/21/28 update, one can accelerate the results so that they're rated overnight. Not a secret I had uncovered. How does it work? Not a secret at all - https://www.englishchess.org.uk/running-club-or-league-events-on-the-lms-and-getting-them-ecf-rated/ .

Yes - see the table listing who's got them in the replies to the Twitter post Gerard referred to.Matt Mackenzie wrote: ↑Sun Dec 03, 2023 6:46 pmSo does this mean that both Cumberland and Westmorland/Furness unitaries have got them?

An update on where the chess tables are to be located: https://twitter.com/JackTShaw/status/1730941649478418883 So, as the scheme was under subscribed, any LA that wanted a table could have got one. It also appears that roughly 1 in 6 of all LA's that could have applied did. Was this a missed oppor...

Re: Chess and puzzles
Was reading this Guardian article from nearly a year ago: Dig deep and think as hard as possible’ – the secrets of success in Scrabble, Sudoku, Jenga and more The chess connection in the article, by the way, is at the bottom: ... and in the middle. Good or bad advice from Jennifer Shahade on how to...

Re: October 2023 ECF AGM
I'm a bit embarrassed to admit I didn't see this here or the ECF website until the recent board minutes published. Neither did I, which makes me think it either didn't, or only very briefly, appeared on the ECF website home page. A pity Shohreh stepping down, particularly if indicates she is steppi...

Hans Niemann warms up for the Classic by winning an all-play-all three points clear of the other nine GMs! https://chess-results.com/tnr852516.aspx?lan=1&art=1&flag=30 Ivan Sokolov's thoughts on this: "It is hard to fight 98 accuracy. "There are (apart delay) no anti cheating measures. Not even a s...

Re: Very long games in weekend tournaments
I agree, I am not sure exactly where the line is on 'bringing the game of chess into disrepute', but this has crossed it by a long way IMO. Shuffling around to try out different plans is one thing, but there is clearly no point behind these moves other than to deliberately waste time. One reason fo...

Re: Building a pgn file
If I wanted a consoldated pgn file of all the games, is there a shortcut? Obviously the long winded route is available, namely create a text file by pasting all the games into it. Assuming you're using a Windows PC, put all the pgn files in one folder, open a command prompt, go to that folder and r...

Re: European Team Championship November 2023
The format of the Champions Chess Tour confuses me. I'm not surprised. If you were trying to create a convoluted format you'd do well to beat the format of the Champions Chess Tour. One curious rule I noticed in the regulations that I've never seen used anywhere else is that in the CCT finals next ...

Re: The wrong confession...perhaps?
My daughter's just started Psychology at Hull; today they have been doing Chess Expertise, with reference to DeGroot (1865) and Chase&Simon (1973) They have been told it takes 3,000 hours to become an expert, and 30,000 to be a chess master so about 10 years Did she question what she was being told...
