Re: Women not cut out for chess

Comments are superfluous. The inane reactions speak for themselves. I am reading a book by Rajiv Malhotra: "Being Different: An Indian Challenge to Western Universalism", HarperCollins 2011. He shows how the West's history-centrism drives it into claims of exclusiveness. It results in anxiety over d...

Re: Women not cut out for chess

It is a question of biology, simply. ...he says, and then lists a whole load of stuff that is cultural and not biological in nature. Do you ever read what you yourself have written? No, it is not cultural. There is no evidence that parents foster their children to behave in these different ways. Th...

Re: Women not cut out for chess

It is a question of biology, simply. Boys at middle school and early teenage spend much time in their boy's room and build model airplanes, or whatever. So they can spend time with a chess board, too. (That's what I did, studying Morphy's games. As a result, I have always been a strong club player.)...

Re: Problems with viewing games on Chessbase

JavaScript is entirely different than Java. You don't need Java to run JavaScript. I have Chrome with JavaScript enabled. I checked it right now, and the games at the ChessBase site work fine for me. /Mats

Planet Capablanca

You have probably heard that Vishy Anand has now a planetoid named after himself: http://en.chessbase.com/post/going-viral-with-planetoid-vishyanand You can name planets as well as craters on Mars here: http://www.uwingu.com/ For a small sum, I have named some craters on Mars myself. Actually, I nam...

John Nunn on BBC World Service

WS Maths and Chess 04 Apr 15 Duration: 10 mins Is it really true that ability in mathematics and chess are somehow linked? Tim Harford pits his wits against a math-professor-turned-professional-chess-player, John Nunn. This programme was first broadcast on the BBC World Service. http://downloads.bbc...

Re: Chess philosophy

Calculation isn't all. There is a function called intuition , lacking in computers. Intuitively, white is lost after Qg4. In fact, human chess players typically try various moves and reject them because they are intuitively bad. So they often choose a move by sifting out the move that they don't fee...

Re: Stalemate wins in K + P versus K

Caruana employed the d3-Spanish in the Sinquefield tournament, against Aronian. He went back and forth with the pieces and happened to win, but it wasn't thanks to the opening. The other Spanish game was against Nakamura, who drew with a Berlin. Future GM chess: 1.e4 e5 1/2-1/2

Re: Stalemate wins in K + P versus K

This is how chess is played today, in yesterday's game, because 1.e4 has been refuted. There's no idea to try for a win. Instead, one must maneuver a little, and then opt for a draw: [Event "Baku FIDE Grand Prix 2014"] [Site "Baku AZE"] [Date "2014.10.02"] [Round "1.5"] [White "Nakamura, Hikaru"] [B...

Re: Stalemate wins in K + P versus K

No, chess players, as a rule, don't like FRC since there is a lack of control. However, it can be remedied by Relocation variants. http://s10.postimg.org/ucrd8kiex/relocationboard.gif The above diagram shows the most simple variant, which produces 64 different positions. FRC castling is employed. Bo...

Review: Chess Openings Encyclopedia 2014 by Convekta

I bought the Chess Openings Encyclopedia 2014 by Convekta for $29.95. It includes 5.4 million games and huge chess trees with both GM and computer evaluations. However, it didn't work properly on my desktop, probably on account of old hardware. But it functions fine on my laptop, although it runs ex...

Re: Stalemate wins in K + P versus K

Well, FIDE aren't going to change the laws of chess based on a few comments on this forum. In that sense any debate is something of a waste of time. Fide decided to endorse Fischer Random chess, which cannot be regarded a success. This decision likely depended on "debates" and lobbying. The problem...

Re: Stalemate wins in K + P versus K

Changing the stalemate rule just sucks. Period. So they said when they introduced the queen in the fifteenth century, to replace the visir. And they probably said the same when the en passant move was introduced in 1490. In musical quarters there was an outcry when the cello ousted the viola da gam...

Re: Stalemate wins in K + P versus K

Roger, playing d3 first isn't regarded a theoretical way to secure an advantage. It is simply slow play, which works fine. But it usually ends in a draw. I don't think it would lead to a significant increase of white's advantage. That would mean that most pawn endgames with pawn up have white as the...
