Re: Takeback requests in online games
It is simple. You should never ask for a takeback, as a refusal often offends. I had thought of saying something similar. I think it is a reference to the sign you used to see in shops "Please don't ask for credit as refusal often offends" I don't think it is meant to be taken literally at face val...

Re: Takeback requests in online games
Eric, Apologies I hadn't realised that you had linked to Lawrence's comment. I think most players accept that mouseslips are just part of the game and it is easiest just not to bother with takebacks. I think it is implicit that if you ask for takebacks then you should also accept (reasonable) ones a...

Re: Takeback requests in online games
I think this comment from Lawrence Cooper re: The European Club Cup gives a pretty good answer to this question "At the captain's meeting it (allowing premoves) was put to a vote (along with auto queen) which resulted in 72% being in favour. The other vote was if to allow takeback requests. 80% vote...

Re: Cheating in chess
Alternatively, taking my other number being 3000 players with an average of 10 games each, this would take too long for the human team simply because there were 10 times as many suspects to investigate. Yes, but we know from looking at the Chess.com cheat numbers which are in the public domain that...

Re: Cheating in chess
Well if you have an automated system why would you design it to throw up 100 games for a human to look at if you knew they only needed to look at 10 (those numbers are for illustrative purposes only). You would simply modify the algorithm so it worked better.

Re: Cheating in chess
Matthew, you aren't rebutting my Lichess numbers, just coming up with what Chess.com claim. It's entirely possible that their claim is true but I've no greater reason to believe Chess.com than any other organisation with a product to sell. Furthermore, since neither platform wishes to disclose its ...

Re: Cheating in chess
Thanks to Matthew and Ian for drawing attention to that interview, where "40-50 people" was indeed mentioned and, later, "the majority of whom are volunteers". Apparently a couple of those people are IMs along with several FMs and NMs. The interviewee also confirmed what I imagine most of us believ...

Re: Cheating in chess
For automated algorithm to work they require a very high threshold of evidence, thus they are not going to be making decisions based on single games. Alternatively just use your common sense, do you really believe Lichess are banning 30,000 people a day?

Re: Cheating in chess
Mathew reckons as many as 40-50 people are on the cheat detection team. If they need that many then sandbagging' (in this case still not proven) will be low priority. I may be wrong but my reading of Matthew's comment ["If there are 40-50 people ..."] seemed speculative rather than a statement of b...

Re: Cheating in chess
The Lichess founder had an AMA (ask me anything) on Reddit. I haven't read the entire thread, but it appears that Lichess gave access to USCF to their anti-cheating method (under NDA) and as a result USCF may well "accredit" Lichess and use it for rating purposes. USCF statment here : https://new.u...

Re: Cheating in chess
No reason to see that game in isolation. I have played through a lot of this guy's games (from recently) and I'm not entirely clear that he is is purposefully losing. He does some strange things and I guess he has a bit of a an attitude. Take this game https://lichess.org/Bf24NO2q/black#10 Perfectly...
