Re: London Chess Classic 2023

The tournament is not open to the public, but all the action from the tournament will be broadcast live online via Londonchessclassic.com Live, or with a delay of a few munutes, perhaps as many as 30 ? Maybe, but with no spectators and access strictly controlled, is there any need for a delay?

According to the website 114 players are registered for the open but only 2 of them are English. Have we ever had a home event with such a disproportionate number of players registered for the open before?
Assuming the Isle of Man is a "home event" for English players ...

An interesting piece bur he would do well to look at his own writings more closely before lambasting others, eg transmission time-delay may be many things, but it is hardly "archaic."

Re: Pedants United

Whilst the author's intention is pretty obvious, what does this statement really mean - "[the new product] is twice as thin [as the old product]"? The old product was 46.2 mm thick, so, to me, that statement means the new product is 92.4 mm thick. Surely it depends on the context? If the old produc...

Re: What have the ECF ever done for us!

Battersea comes close to this in that it is possible to have matches on one side of the hall and social chess on the other side without the latter unduly affecting the former Battersea is a great club, but on the nights I've played serious matches there it has been noisier than any other club in th...

Re: What have the ECF ever done for us!

The ECF rating policy is that either the whole event is submitted for rating or that no results are submitted. Thanks, Brian. That is what I had always assumed and I was disturbed to see people ( I think ) suggesting otherwise. I welcome the unequivocal statement of ECF rating policy on submitting ...

Re: what do you consider as biggest threat to organized chess?

Prizes irrelevant to me when choosing a tournament, as I said in my first post on this forum. But certainly not for some people. I think English weekenders and their prize structures are unique to England and an invention of the Fischer generation. So possible demographic change will end them. Perh...

Re: what do you consider as biggest threat to organized chess?

This may be a UK thing. I played in an admittedly small tournament in Portugal where all the participants won books. It was played in the library of a museum in Lisbon in Portugal and I was given the illustrated guidebook to the museum as a prize although unfortunately it seems to have been “mispla...

Re: what do you consider as biggest threat to organized chess?

Maybe the emphasis elsewhere at least for some players is the enjoyment rather than the prize especially if it means events can be held in more attractive venues. For most, I expect. Particularly in rating limited events where the prizes are likely to be won by players whose ratings are lower than ...
