Re: English Language Book Using Algebraic

"I think Chess also had the odd one-off experiment with algebraic before that"

Yes, round about 1947 - (I remembered why I thought that.)

Re: English Language Book Using Algebraic

Didn't "Chess" experiment with algebraic early on? I still remember one of our veteran club members, born 1899, steadfastly using R-QKtsq into the 1970s

Re: Media comments on chess

1973 - 1976, Are we talking about episode entitled "We shall not be moved" so I don't have to watch multiple episodes? Not because I think it was rubbish! I think it was a reasonable programme at the time, with quite a good cast.

Re: also available on cassette...

I asked Mike if he knew that Paulsen had played it vs Morphy and he expressed surprise, but he could have been being polite of course. When did you ask him? He talked about Hartston telling him about the Paulsen games on the cassette. He might well have forgotten many years later, of course. It mus...

Polonius would be proud of him, "This above all, to thine own self be true".
Polonius is an old bore who repeats stock phrases umder the impression that he's dispensing wisdom
And it happens to this day.

Re: also available on cassette...

I played the 4....Bc5 line up until mid-80s, and got about 68 % (nearly 100 games) with black, and +2=0-0 with white, almost falling out of my chair when someone played it against me about 10 years ago. There were some spectacularly depressing reverses with it, but mainly against people 200 points h...

Re: 25th 4ncl Congress!

"I do find it hard to see how a Swiss section of, say, 20 people all in the same room could fail to be a gathering of 20 people, however well separated the tables were." I agree, I can see how APA groups of 6 might work. On the singing thing, I would imagine that choirs are probably more likely to o...

Re: 25th 4ncl Congress!

There seem to be many interpretations - choirs are not allowed to gather to practise, but I understand that at one pub, people attending to watch an Association Football match on TV stood to sing the national anthem before the game. That was ok, apparently.

"how to correctly pronounce the players names etc by, I'm sure it Mr. Barden"

Bernard Cafferty did one on Russian, which included players' names - maybe that was a different one.

Re: FIDE rating differences between countries

And you do get anomalies like young Praggnanandhaa, who played at Rekjavik 2018 with a rating of 2507 (performance 2579) and in the rapidplay, his rating was 1736, with a 2597 performance... (The RP was Chess960, so wasn't rated as RP).

I quite understand your caution. In fairness, the usual delays with testing are caused by it taking months to get approval for the...
