Re: ECF meeting reports

Given that the question related specifically to rating restricted congresses, that would seem the obvious solution. The ECF has or had a rule about qualification for the British Championship that it ran a Grand Prix whereby potential qualifiers had to score points in "Open" tournaments, where Open ...

There are also minutes for Board meeting 156 held on 26 October:
These reveal that the Director of Events has resigned and her responsibilities allocated elsewhere. The spare Director's slot has been filled by appointing another non-Exec, the narrowly defeated candidate in the October election.

Re: ECF meeting reports

Am I right in thinking that the typical rated restricted congress that I may enter (I am 1550 rated) will now be FIDE rated as well as ECF rated. Those that have notional four hour sessions, the 90 30 move rate for instance, may well choose to do so. Those with shorter sessions, say 75 30, 90 15 an...

I really don't agree that in the Advance system 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 Bf5 that Nigel Short's 4. Nf3 is only the tenth most important move. It's actually the most popular.

Re: ECF meeting reports

Will those questions be put at the next meeting? The next meeting of the ECF Council is not until April, if that's what you mean by "next meeting". It's supposed to be a Finance meeting and it can be difficult to get other matters discussed. Disputes at Director's Board meetings are usually kept un...

Re: Very long games in weekend tournaments

mr lalic has appears to have taken it upon himself to crusade against this needlessly long increment by proving in very real terms just what a terrible idea it is, repeatedly causing the nightmare scenario for the organisers until something gets changed. 10 and 15 second increments are not uncommon...

Re: Very long games in weekend tournaments

It might be better if there was a delay rather than an increment. Either the clock doesn't start for the first 30 seconds of each move, or 30 seconds is added but the clock reverts to what you had if you move in under 30 seconds. The USCF were very keen on this method. For that reason many brands o...

Re: Very long games in weekend tournaments

It would be difficult I imagine for FIDE to craft a Law specifically forbidding such conduct, but I wouldn't be unhappy to see them try. If you could program the clock, switching off increments at a high number of moves would put the game back in the hands of the arbiter by virtue of being able to ...

Re: Building a pgn file

Each pgn4web board has its pgn sourced as a text string (rather than from a single games database) so I can't see that there's a neat shortcut to get all the games in one go. Clicking the square d8 is supposed to give the pgn of all the games, but it's only doing the same as clicking c8, namely the...

Assuming you're using a Windows PC, put all the pgn files in one folder, open a command prompt, go to that folder and run

Code: Select all

copy *.pgn all-games.pgn
That's using the old MSDOS method. The problem will remain in creating several hundred pgn files from the website, one for each game.

Building a pgn file

The Kidlington Congress has an archive of games played in recent years For example https://kidlingtonchess.org.uk/games-2023/ These use the pgn4web software to display the games. If you click on c8, you get the pgn source for each individual game. For example [Event "44th KIDLINGTON CHESS TOURNAMENT...

Re: European Team Championship November 2023

The MCF floated the idea of lowest average rated team wins for draws in cup matches, that didn't get support Berkshire runs its cup competition on a handicap basis using total ratings of the six board teams. This has the side effect that tied matches go to the lower rated team. The rating scales ar...

The Division 1 captains select teams based solely on rating - I would be the 10th reserve or so for our B team based on that system.

That's where you need to lobby for a change in attitude. It doesn't have to be any bigger a change than selecting on the higher of standard and rapidplay rating.

And in case you haven't noticed, which you could say also holds true for the vast majority of the chess playing public It doesn't though. To faciliate cheating you need to communicate moves to an engine and get the feedback. The communication part and delivery of moves and assesment is readily avai...

I've won two games against this in a very cheap manner.

You continue 4. Nf3 Bg4 5. dxc5 e6 6. c3 and now 6. .. Bxc5 is a serious mistake because of 7. Qa4 check. Other move orders are possible.
