Re: Touch move and castling

FIDE Law 4.2.2 (2018) states: 4.2.2 Any other physical contact with a piece, except for clearly accidental contact, shall be considered to be intent. This deals with contact, and as no FIDE Law deals with quitting the piece, it could be viewed as a lacuna, a missing part in the chain of FIDE Law. Ho...

does it really matter.
You should get that translated into Latin and put on a coat of arms Geoff

'quod vere non refert.' or something like that.
Cicero may have said something like hoc nihil ad te pertinet. Ask John Saunders, he's the expert.

Re: Cheating in chess

A simple check of Chessbase online will show that there are a number of games with 2300+ players from this position. Indeed, 7. h3 has even been played once by Kasparov, albeit in a simul against Oxford United football team. And by Fischer... I can see several games in Chessbase from the 1990s and ...

Re: Cheating in chess

I have a question for those that know something about the statistical matching methods used to compare players' moves with engines' best n moves. Is there some allowance made for opening preparation being made in events which have moved from otb to online, particularly where long time controls have ...

Thank you, David - an excellent bit of research in the old journals. It seems to confirm what I understood. Why the norm is not registered with FIDE is a little odd.

Thank you also, Roger de Coverley, John McKenna and Nigel Short for your useful contributions.

Re: Peter Markland

Your question may be irrelevant, unfortunately. Norms obtained prior to 2005 or 2006 - I forget which - can no longer be registered with FIDE. This is a shame. As David McAlister has established, the contemporary chess press appears to have recognised that Peter Markland made an IM norm at Hastings...

Re: Ron Henderson

That is sad news. Ron was a stalwart of Ulster Chess, not only a middling to good club player, but also a capable organiser at Bangor CC, one of Northern Ireland's longest established chess clubs. The obituary given by Ken Browne is indeed correct, Ron was a gentleman. I last played him as a late te...

Re: Peter Markland

Now for my next question on this subject to those more in the know than I am. Does a score of 5/9 against a tournament average of 2513.3, with the tournament compromised of 6 GMs, 2 IMs and two untitled players, with a sole unrated player (being the player scoring the 5/9), with eight nationalities ...

Re: Peter Markland

Yes, I have known for about a week that Peter Markland has received his deserved FIDE Master title, but the ECF requested that I refrain from announcing it ahead of their announcement. I am delighted that Peter Lee has also been awarded the title.

As for vitamin D, anyone taking 10 times the recommended dose for an extended period is a complete barking halfwit, risking hypercalcemia, osteoporosis, kidney damage and more.

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Geoff, We appreciate your light-hearted zany interludes, but I think all medical experts would advise you to get the second jab. As I understand it, the jab might not help if you have a pre-existing coronavirus condition, but it won't make it worse, so it is a no lose option. However, I am no medic...

Re: To whom is she referring?

Nobody would say such a thing to a 'Chess Life' reporter (and brag about it after wards) unless they were trying to be smart-assed outdoing each other with bravado (the American, New York insults came just one year after 9/11 so these were they designed to shock.) She should have named them, then t...

To whom is she referring?

In Chess Bitch, Chapter 11 Playing for America, Jennifer Shahade writes: Not all of my memories from Olympiads are positive. In the 2002 event (held in Bled, Slovenia), in addition to playing, I was writing about the Olympiad for Chess Life (the national chess magazine). I wanted to interview two of...
