Re: The ACO is back!

This’ll probably be my last post on this thread for a while (cue ‘ hear, hear ’ from David & Tim?). The 31 March 2021 deadline has passed and the next cut-off date for the €100 discount is 31 May 2021. With still six months to go, the ACO Seniors in Crete in October 2021 has up 'til this point attra...

Re: Never mind the 80s, what’s everyone listening to today?

Most of these are shockingly bad! In the late sixties I was a regular visitor to the Marquee Club in Wardour Street. It was cheap! I’d watch Joe Cocker, Yes, Jethro Tull, The Who, Canned Heat, Muddy Waters, (Peter Green’s) Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, Led Zeppelin (nee Yardbirds) , but The Nice wer...

Re: The ACO is back!

Numbers are up again this morning as the 31 March deadline for the maximum discount approaches. There are now 172 registrations for the ACO Crete Seniors in October. Mostly German of course, but with a blanket over eighteen countries in total: 85 German; 23 Swiss; 14 English; 11 Dutch; 7 Austrians; ...

Re: Media comments on chess

The Poke is a satirical news website. This is an old report from October last year with a Top-Ten list of Daily Mail readers comments. No 1 is very good, but I've posted here to note especially No 9 from a reader in America. https://www.thepoke.co.uk/2020/10/01/simply-17-daily-mail-reader-comments-...

Re: The ACO is back!

so a holiday with unregulated Chess? First it’s Chess , nine rounds played in seven rating sections from U1200 up in 200 rating bands; second it’s Chess , where else do you get two Grandmasters sitting outside the playing area helping amateurs with their post-game analysis; third it’s Chess , two e...

Re: The ACO is back!

Nick’s name appeared on the list this morning, making it 158 registrations in total for October. We’ve dropped back to fourteen English entries after a defection to Wales and, of course, Nick plays under the Bermuda flag. Don’t you just love chess - we’re going to have so much fun!

Re: The ACO is back!

There’s been a mini-flood of new registrations for the ACO World Seniors at Crete’s Fodele Beach Resort in October as players aim to beat the 31 March 2021 deadline for the full €200 discount. There are now 156 registrations, and among them are 15 are classified English. Registrations for the ACO Am...

Never mind the 80s, what’s everyone listening to today?

Okay pop-pickers. Never mind what you were listening to in the 80s, what are you listening now? Can you list the last five CDs/downloaded Albums you’ve bought (or someone bought for you)? My list goes back about six months, with the latest three post-Christmas 2020. I suspect we'll end up with a mix...

Re: The ACO is back!

Meanwhile, with six months to go before the start of the Seniors in Crete, and only twelve days left to get registered for the €200 discount, there are now 141 names on the list, fourteen of whom are English. The water flumes await - with special mention of the strobe lit ‘Black Hole’. Let’s face it...

Of course, in those times there was no vaccine, but according to the results pages from the local press, chess continued alongside darts, skittles and bagatelle.
Crucially, there was also no SAGE.
No we had Newsholme instead!

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

The harbinger of doom! Mind you the 1918/19 Spanish 'Flu pandemic came in three waves, the second the most virulent by far and the third the least. It returned in a much milder form in 1920 with only a handful of deaths. Of course, in those times there was no vaccine, but according to the results pa...

Re: 25th 4ncl Congress!

For those who hadn't noticed - Guaranteed Events are taking bookings 01656 747-700. I made mine today and apparently about thirty others have already done the same, four months before a clock has started - that's a positive sign - and at a very reasonable £69 per night for a double room for sole occ...

Re: Civil Service Rules

The Civil Service wasn't alone. I think the rule also applied to teachers and post office workers, and even (I believe) to nurses. I remember my aunt drove a lorry during the war but was out of a job soon after VE Day when the men started to come home. She was married and joined the Civil Service as...
