Re: Could everyone lose their grade
We have no plans to ditch history already available on the site. We will be turning off the old Grading website when hits drop to a low level. Brian Valentine Manager of ECF rating Those two sentences seem contradictory to me. The old Grading website is an invaluable historical record. I urge the E...

Re: Could everyone lose their grade
The rules for grades will be changed in September to support monthly grading. We are still on track to deliver these on time. Everyone who has had at least one grade (separately for standard and rapid) published since 2017 will have a 4-digit grade for January 2020 when our monthly calculations wil...

Re: Proposed reorganisation
4NCL will need to look at the tie break rules for 2021-2. The current rules are designed to pick winners. In splitting swiss ties nearer the mid point, it would be desireable to weight things more by how hard the draw had been for each tied team. There is also case for having modified pairings, perh...

Re: Master List
The masterlist in its old form is no longer available. While I don't know exactly what you are using it for, there are a number of ways of extracting data here: https://www.ecfrating.org.uk/v2/help/help_api.php

Re: Media comments on chess
The paper does show the improvement either by calendar year or year of birth is more relevant than the ageing effect. I was getting hopeful, in that it appeared in one graph that there was a reversal to improvement above 65. Unfortunately this appears to apply to those born prior to 1924 and also ma...

Re: Could everyone lose their grade
There is a problem with last night's update, which failed. The new categories should be included when this is fixed.

Under the 40 point rule each opponent would score 110 for their win, they are not pulled down.

Re: Interview with FIDE President
That is a good point. There are many leagues which have some sort of board order rule based on grading. I would imagine they would say that the August rating counts for all matches up to Christmas or even the entire season. Otherwise you could imagine the monthly list being published 5 minutes befo...

Re: New ECF Rating Database
The ECF rating database has been updated with ratings labelled Oct 1, but it is unclear if these are newly calculated as mine has stayed at 1998 since Aug 1 Your ECF rating will not have changed unless either: 1. You have played rated OTB chess under ECF auspices since August 1; or: 2. You applied ...

Re: The new Monthly grades are out
The conversion was a tricky decision. We decided that status quo (7.5*grade+700=Elo) was the least unpalatable. I did a short investigation following a post on this forum from Roger Lancaster. It was available on the ECF website till we went live. I don't see why it cannot be added here so I've atta...

We had to fix that glitch. Matt Carr's heroics in getting Blackpool graded have now been rewarded by inclusion on the website.

But Michael we've been forewarned because of the request to alter the k-factor for those with short arms.Michael Farthing wrote: ↑Sun Aug 02, 2020 9:54 pmHopefully these regulations are buried so deep that Matthew Carr and Brian Valentine will be unable to find them, or at least not feel like searching for them.

Re: July 2020 grades
The current database will be turned off and the vast majority of the data will be transferred to the new system. For obvious reasons the new system will not be built to calculate Clarke grades. Hence the need to get the data right before the August update.

Adrian Elwin and I have agreed that we will look at an appropriate set of comparable standards when the new rating system is up and running.
