Re: Dave Pardoe RIP

Still not sure what his forum sig "BRING BACK THE BCF" actually meant, but RIP anyway. Always sad when a forum member passes away.

It does sound very like our current PM, though.

Re: Major investment to transform future of English chess announced

Cumbria country council does not exist any more, of course.

So does this mean that both Cumberland and Westmorland/Furness unitaries have got them?

Re: Speed Demon: The Fascinating Games and Tragic Life of Alexey Vyzhmanavin

He is just one of a few Soviet GMs beneath world title challenger level about whom very interesting books could be written.

And yes, I agree with the review - as many complete games as possible please!

Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2

There have been suggestions that "indications" was a poor translation and he was in fact rather less commital.

I only asked because that does include some established theory that goes into move 20-something.

I think the latter claim has been challenged, but yes that is an example of the sort of thing I was getting at.

Succinct skewering in this review.

Cover: 'The Easy Way'
Page 129: '50...Kd6! to hold this grotty ending'
Sorry, what review ;)

Is the variation referred to part of the Panov main line?

And on this occasion he's not right (as opposed to, perhaps, right wing)

Yes, the aim should always be to return it in time for it to be engraved for that year's AGM or similar landmark.

IM Steffen Pedersen

The former Danish champion, as well as IM, has died just before his 49th birthday.

But he was maybe best known as an author, being especially prolific as an openings writer a while ago.

I have a book he wrote on the Advance French and related lines.

Am I the only one hoping for Niemann to qualify for the top group next time...?
And come 2025 Carlsen and Nakamura are playing :)

Re: European Team Championship November 2023

Carlsen also won the personal gold medal in this event, though - previously one of the few things he hadn't managed in competitive chess.

(today is also the 10th anniversary of him becoming World Champion btw)

Does he have any more classical chess due this calendar year?
