RE: Funeral.
This may not be going ahead at the location/time stated. Len died with little/no money and had fallen out with his brother, who initially was going to pay for the service, has now indicated he is not willing to do so.

Len M Pickett
I'm saddened to report news that former Kent and Lewisham player Len M Pickett has died after a long illness. Len's time at Lewisham pre-dates my own, and he hasn't been active since the turn of the Century. Older members remember he was a strong player who turned out for our top teams and for the K...

Re: Tyrone Jefferies (1950 - 2025)
Echoing the sentiments of David - Ty put his heart into chess - he did more than his fair share of organising and captaining, but was equally happy to do so. One of our last personal email interactions was checking in and asking for running updates on a match score that meant both his teams achieved...

Re: Keeping your scoresheets
I've kept all mine since returning to playing chess about 10 years ago. I actually digitised all my games in the past couple of months whilst between jobs - 'only' 200 in total - I don't want/won't have time to do that again! Have backed up and also saved my database in a large pgn file (which is sy...

Re: Heinrich Fraenkel
Hi Jon, It was with reference to the first article that you posted, which concerns WW2 "When war broke out again, Fraenkel, like many other German nationals, was interned" Moving back to topic, this could be seen as a slight contradiction to the events in the British Chess Federation detailing the w...

Re: Heinrich Fraenkel
'H Fraenkel' appears as a team member of the winning Lewisham St Marys Institute teams of 1935 and 1937 (Kent County Cup), and was on board 3 in a crucial 1938 London League match behind Vera Menchik and R.C Noel-Johnson (a 6 time Kent Individual Champion by that point). So certainly a strong county...

Re: A National Rapidplay Club (OTB) Competition?
I would be in favour of this kind of event continuing online. One of the positive things about the influx onto online chess was the ability to link up and play against clubs we ordinarily would never face. We polled our members about playing in the OTB 4NCL after the enthusiasm of the Online offerin...

Re: ECF Rolling Membership - Club Views Requested
You may have seen that the ECF has published revised guidelines on the Pay-to-Play (Rolling Membership) issue https://www.englishchess.org.uk/pay-to-play-and-game-fee-2023-24/ Unfortunately this doesn't clear much up with regards to the initial problem for clubs. Hopefully we'll see this discussed f...

ECF Rolling Membership - Club Views Requested
Hello, This is for attention of club secretaries/those involved in running clubs. Can I ask how you are intending to deal with risk of ECF Rolling Membership? Specific Example as below: e.g. ‘Joe Bloggs’. Joe renewed his membership in Feb 2023. He will count as eligible as of 30-June-2023. Joe then ...

Re: Peter E Hammerton, 1966 Kent Individual Champion
Thx Jon.
I agree that Peter hails from Dover, and it might be that I need to consider he was affiliated with a club in the area around that time. I'll need to check the ECF yearbook to see which clubs were in existence at that point.
Thank you for the link.

Peter E Hammerton, 1966 Kent Individual Champion
Hello, I've been working on a couple of projects for Kent Chess, one of which is trying to tie previous winners of the Individual Trophy (dating back to 1899!) to the club they were affiliated with Of the last few players I'm struggling with - one is that of Peter Edward Hammerton, Kent Individual C...
