Re: 2026 Chess Olympiad
Monika Ashbrooke of Jersey scored a half a point more than the requirement of 6/9 for the WFM qualification. I think this means that she requires a rating of 1900+ for the title, rather than the normal 2100. You would be right, in any other tournament where the direct title had been acheived. This ...

Re: 2026 Chess Olympiad
Actually, looking at it, replacing the first round opponent with a 2212 player, reduces the norm requirement for WGM to 6/9.

Re: 2026 Chess Olympiad
Over the eight rounds so far she has faced opponents with an average rating of 17683/8 = 2210. Her current performance rating is 2403 (from chess-results.com, not checked this calculation). You forgot to raise the first round opponent to 2000 for a WGM norm and 2050 for a IM norm, As it stands WGM ...

Re: European Seniors 2026

The Championship was decided based on 3 tie breaks, that as it happened were equal after the completion of the 5 rounds - so a coin toss was required to determine the winner. The fun bit was they gave me a different set of tie b...

Re: Leaving the board without resigning
Actually, this behaviour is often much more tragic. This is often a child under pressure from their parents, who will get in trouble if they lost and return to their parents too quickly, so they sit there and let their time run so they don't get in trouble; or perhaps on the flip side, the game las...

I know what the laws say - I was merely referencing the document you said you couldn't find.
I've learned my lesson now - don't respond to people who are more interested in their post count than an exchange of information.

Re: Leaving the board without resigning
Although aimed at FIDE competitions, it does say in the document preface that it also applies to all FIDE Rated events.
In https://handbook.fide.com/files/handboo ... _Rules.pdf it is covered in 9.5, no eating.

Re: Media comments on chess
considering that in chess you shake hands to mark the point of resignation, If only that was the case. British Junior Rapidplay this year player A states they said 'Draw' and stuck out a hand, Player B claims they never heard it and 'accepted the resignation'. Instructions at the start of each roun...

Don't think his application made it for the September batch, FIDE Titles page is now showing applications for the 3rd Council - I presume sometime in December.

Always trade-off's in a democratic society. I prefer the £250k saving in not having the voting.

Re: License to play chess
I tell online arena individuals to contact the IRO and ask it to be updated to ENG - always worked so far. Us mere mortals don't have the ability to "...just ignore their FOA ID, and make a new ENG one from scratch." If we put it through as if they don't have a FIN the IRO tells us they do when they...
