Re: Gavin Wall
Tragically early death-and indeed he was a very nice chap as well as a mercurial chess player. I recall in the second of the Surrey Open team’s ECF National County Championship glory runs-Gavin played an integral part winning for Surrey in the Quarter Final Semi Final and Final with extremely strong...

Re: Tim Dickinson
Shocked- that is so soo young!
Tim was one of the calmest, nicest chess players I have met, and that pleasantness was sooo evident also in the manner in which he was a Very Effective Arbiter.
A big loss to Chess UK. My Condolences to all his friends and family...so sad!
Owen.

Re: FM Graham Morrison
Simon -yes indeed he played many a game for the Top Lancashire County team-and I always knew our Top Surrey Player was in for a stern test. Graham was a very good chess player-indeed amongst the best Amateur players in U.K. chess for a period of at least Forty years. He was also a nice guy and quite...

Re: Les Collard
Sorry to see yet another keen player move upstairs. Les was a thorough Gent and quite a decent player -I recall a tough game on Bd one in the last rd in the Weald Major about six or seven years ago. I won and thereby deprived him of the prize money yet he was most forthcoming about me thoroughly des...

Re: Paul Haddock (1964-2024)
Shocked and saddened to see this news-a relatively young man still. Paul as others have said was a really nice guy and a real lover of chess whilst still being aware that he despite serious efforts was not one of its best practitioners! In recent years I haven’t played in that many tournaments but I...

Re: Stewart Reuben
I was very sorry to hear this news. The U.K. and indeed International Chess scene has lost one of its keenest players and longest regular players and organisers. I too recall his early work re the regular Islington Series of events and I believe he did a great deal of work for the ECF and before tha...

Re: World Rapid & Blitz Championship 26th to 30th December 2024
Thanks for that contribution Paul: It therefore seems that Magnus didn't Breach THE FIDE DRESS CODE Rules, But rather special Dress Code Rules for this event. What I had read elsewhere was therefore somewhat misleading... It is Unfortunate if FIDE for a flagship event brings in separate rules-but I ...

Either way the matter has now caused somewhat of a furore! I cannot see that is good for the image of Chess.

Re: World Rapid & Blitz Championship 26th to 30th December 2024
If Magnus was wearing Jeans which were not torn then wasn't he actually meeting the demands of the said FIDE Rules-are are the FIDE DRESS CODE rules being misquoted in the media?
If he wasn't breaking The FIDE DRESS CODE RULES then Magnus naturally stood his ground on the matter.

Re: London Chess Classic 2023
Malcolm Pein and his team did indeed do a great job organising and putting on and introducing the London Chess Classic and its related Open at Olympia over a number of years. Indeed he also put on a number of graded events during the periods these other events were running and also daily Blitz event...
