Re: "Resetting" my rapid rating
The Division 1 captains select teams based solely on rating All of them? You would like to think there would be one club in the county where the captain acts in a rational manner - have you checked? No, just the captains in my club - I'm sure they would argue it's the only objectively fair way of s...

Re: "Resetting" my rapid rating
The Division 1 captains select teams based solely on rating - I would be the 10th reserve or so for our B team based on that system. That's where you need to lobby for a change in attitude. It doesn't have to be any bigger a change than selecting on the higher of standard and rapidplay rating. I th...

Re: "Resetting" my rapid rating
This matters because presently my rating precludes my selection for higher teams in the country league. This is the bit I don't understand. Who says so? There are two country divisions - Division 1 and Division 2 - Division 2 has a 1640 rating cap. The Division 1 captains select teams based solely ...

Re: "Resetting" my rapid rating
I think the only long term answer is "play more". 97 points is a huge rating gain from 10 games. Sure, but my play more options are to sandbag in county Div 2 (with a u1640 ceiling) for the next 4-5 years or travel to rapid tournaments, which isn't how I would choose to spend my chess time/money bu...

"Resetting" my rapid rating
START BORING CONTEXT I'm in a weird spot whereby my rapidplay rating is trapped 400-500 points below my true level. This happened through a combination of playing in the county team championships a few months after learning the rules back in 2018 (ouch) and the move to the new rating system, which I...

Re: what do you consider as biggest threat to organized chess?
When playing at a congress "away from home", the tournament entry fees are dwarfed by travel and accommodation costs. If Scarborough doubled their entry fees, I doubt I'd notice against the 400 mile round trip, the holiday apartment costs, parking charges and the obligatory penny arcade tenner. As G...

Re: Accusation against Alejandro Ramirez
Don't do it John. Nowhere in that thread did Sabrina say it was a team mate who assaulted her. And nowhere has Sabrina asked for people to try to figure out the details she has chosen to leave out.
Sabrina's keyboard has 26 letter keys, she can type out all the names she wants to, when she wants to.

Re: Hilarious chess.com advertisement
I'm surprised that they are struggling with server capacity due to player overload now rather then two years ago, it almost feels like they were happy to get all that extra revenue over lockdown but failed to reinvest any of it into improving site performance. I don't think it's as simple as a lack...

Re: Cambridge International Open
Failing to invite the people that the event is being held for seems like a perfect summing up of the situation. And I would not be surprised if the "lack of take-up" is cited as a reason why they wont invest in future norm generating events.

Re: Cambridge International Open
Witney Congress runs (superbly) out of a Sixth Form canteen and fits ~100 entrants.
For what has been marketed as a flagship event, it is a really poor effort.

Re: Cambridge International Open
So the ECF organised a major international Open and picked a venue where they could only fit 58 boards? Please note – entries are currently closed.
I didn't realise the E stood for embarrassing.
