Re: Takeback requests in online games

For a casual game, of course. Anyone can do whatever they want in a casual game with a friend. But for a rated or a tournament game, I would disagree. These games do not exist in isolation, and by allowing players to fix their mistakes, you are impacting other players too. What you are also forgetti...

Re: Takeback requests in online games

But how do you validate the intent of the player? If you are a super GM, you probably can tell if it's an honest mistake / mouseslip. But at other levels? Too often a player plays a move and only realises he is hanging a piece or falling to a tactic or made a positional mistake. He suddenly asks for...

Re: Results of 12th April Junior Tournament

Agreed, as I said on the other thread, it was a fantastic success. Children were so happy to play OtB again (and I am sure adults will be too when they are allowed!). Parents had to re-learn the skill of waiting in between round, especially with social distancing in place. Now hopefully someone will...

Re: Events in 2021

I am doing four rapidplay events in July and August, but I would like to have 10 all play sections of 6. However FIDE would charge £70 per section to rate them! So I think I will just stick to ECF rating these... Can't you do it as a swiss (they'll still be playing al, but the pairing would be dete...

Re: Cheating in chess

The Lichess founder had an AMA (ask me anything) on Reddit. I haven't read the entire thread, but it appears that Lichess gave access to USCF to their anti-cheating method (under NDA) and as a result USCF may well "accredit" Lichess and use it for rating purposes. USCF statment here : https://new.us...

Re: U12 Junior OTB Event Sunday 25th April Oxford

Thanks for organising the April 12th event, it was really well done and all children looked very happy to enjoy over the board chess again! Parents had plenty of distanced space in separate classrooms, masks were worn everywhere (except for 10 year olds or younger)and I saw hand gel available at eve...

Touch move and castling

Quick question from today's junior event: Player A intended to castle long. He correctly picked up the king first, but along the way dropped it on d1, picked it up again, placed it on the correct square c1, then moved the rook correctly and pressed the clock. The opponent claimed that since he let g...

Re: Hansen on Nakamura

I am not familiar with all the stories, but it seems that prior to rebranding himself as the friendliest super GM on twitch, there were accusation of extreme arrogance: * at university, introducing himself as "I was smarter at 10 and achieved more than you'll ever do in your lives" to his room-mates...

Those who are in touch with the junior scene in Thames valley or M25, can you forward them the link to the event: https://forms.gle/JYRbqdsQgxffwuzP8 I got a few registrations but need more to make sure the event goes ahead. A few families told me they would have liked to participate, but since it's...

Re: Cheating in chess

Above 1k rapid is insane in a year. Blitz and bullet I can understand.
But a rapid is on average what? 30 minutes? That is something like 1.5 hour a day. 3k is 4-5 hour a day.
And don't get me started on players who have 1k+ classical games, that's even more impressive.

Re: Cheating in chess

When I correlated ECF and Fide, excluding juniors, the formula is more 7.5x + 600, so a 200 is more of a 2100 Fide. Juniors mess up the correlation a lot. Regarding Lichess, it is unfortunately not as easy as the population curve is very different than Fide's. At the lower end, it is very routine to...

Re: Cheating in chess

Correct, I did a bit of rounding and the correct words would be about points not wins. But in short 8 wins or 16 draws against a 400+ every 100 games. Out of curiosity I went and checked an online calculator which gives 3% win and 10% draw against a +400. Which means roughly one game out of 7-8 you ...

Re: Cheating in chess

I'll PM you. But in old money, I suppose I'm not a massive believer in being able to improve from 170-ish level to cruising at 230-240+ type level 10 months later. Just seems a bit unlikely. Thanks for letting me know. I think this debate here shows why we need cameras, screen shares, etc... as we ...

Re: Cheating in chess

It’s a shame as he’d scored something like 21.5/23 in the events he’d entered. That might be the reason his account got flagged! It’s an interesting question of how much even a promising junior can improve in 10 months? February 2020 player X was a slightly out of form 170-ish level in final over t...
