Re: Chess history trivia
It should be added that in Ireland, if the tripled pawns are black, then white is morally obliged to push a pawn to meet them and immediately buy both players a pint of Guinness.

Re: Chess history trivia
I think it specifically relates to two games involving the Irish player Éamon Keogh in that tournament.
The first game is here; the pawns arise at move 10. Miles then played Keogh in the next round and won, with his final move being to establish tripled pawns.

Re: 4NCL Online
On a slightly separate note, the Junior 4NCL gets underway on Thursday, with player lists to be submitted by (I presume) Wednesday.
Will the fixtures be published tomorrow so?

Re: 4NCL Online
Curiously, exactly the opposite outcome to the Junior 4NCL where the organisers seem to have expected an increase but actual entries were well down. I find the contrast puzzling, as I suspect do the organisers. Any theories? For what it's worth, from our point of view as a club that has teams in bo...

Re: 4NCL Online
Yep, that was recommended to us alright as a result, though as a lot of the players were new to lichess, we didn't know you could do that at the time.
But yes, would definitely recommend to any junior teams to do that. (Though I can't remember how to do it now!

Re: 4NCL online - some chess!!!
Also, the pairing scheme used entailed, after the first 7 all-play-all rounds, teams playing counterpart teams from other groups. That created imbalances. Where, after 7 rounds, the first, second and [say] seventh seeds were in a three-way fight for the two quarter-final places, the seventh seed ha...

Re: 4NCL online - some chess!!!
The regular 4NCL's rules on subbing are simply the regular rules it has about team composition, together with a rule that you can't play twice in the same round, whether or not the round is stretched over more than one date. So that's basically what we had here then - you just have to be declared w...

Re: 4NCL online - some chess!!!
You're asking the wrong person there! It may be as simple as numbers exceeding expectations. I can't imagine it was considered that whole teams would have walked out. I thought the format was fine (though I don't understand why match points are used over game points in all-play-all groups, but again...

Re: 4NCL online - some chess!!!
If the ratings given in the results of the recent Finals are to be believed then the 1st season was already lopsided since the team that won Div. 4 had a higher average rating (2044) than the teams that were runners-up in Div. 3 (2021) & Div. 2 (2025). In the 2nd season any new or rejoining team wi...

Re: 4NCL online - some chess!!!
A win on board 4 means you lose on second tie-break - If the event of a drawn match, the tie will be broken using: a. The lower board count in the results between the teams which remain tied; b. The game points remaining after elimination of the bottom board or boards as necessary; c. The team with ...

Re: 4NCL Online
Yep. I should clarify that I think it's unlikely in this case, knowing the player. I know that's involves a leap of faith of course. (Actually, as an aside, I did see a player banned from lichess for cheating in ultrabullet (15 seconds) recently. He had evidently not only hooked an engine up to his ...

Re: 4NCL Online
You've understood everything fine from what I can tell :) Mildly surprised at that if I'm honest! :) But it's good to hear! I suppose the background for my query is that we did have a player banned during the season when their account was marked as receiving computer assistance. It leaves me in a t...
