England was represented by Zhou Yang-Fan, Akash Jain, Saravanan Sathyanandha and Sam Walker. The team was seeded 9th out of 22 and finished with 4 wins, 1 draw and 5 losses. Clearly, there were huge differences in strength between many of the countries, resulting in several matches finishing 4-0. Yang-Fan Zhou was the star of the England team scoring 6/10 on board 1 and qualifying for his FM title after winning in round 9. Akash scored 5 whilst Saravanan & Sam both finished with 4.

Stewart Haslinger finished 2nd= with Jovica Radovanovic on 3.5/5, half a point behind the winner GM Piotr Bobras from Poland. The grading prizes were won by Brandon Clarke, Roger Williamson and Ian Heppell. Somewhat bizarrely, there were only 8 players in the tournament and 7 won prizes!

Gawain bounced back from a surprise loss in round 2 to Mike Steadman to win outright with 7.5/9 after winning his last round with black against IM Stephen Soloman who was half behind going into the last round. Gawain's tournament performance was 2581. My thanks to him for providing daily updates on msn due to the total lack of activity on the tournament website. I'm hopeful they will update the site once the tournament has finished.

Re: International Round Up 06/10/09
I was just looking at the results for the European Club Cup: Jan Willem Van De Griendt had a great start with 2/3 and a 2600 perf. but didn't play in round 4 or 5. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you need to play at least 7 games to get a norm, and with his start he was surely in with a shout of getting an IM norm.
Also, great to see Mickey Adams back on form: 4/4 so far.

Re: International Round Up 06/10/09
I'm beginning to think Jan was only there for the first three rounds or has fallen ill but no doubt all will be revealed. My lousy maths suggests that 7 players could play 6 rounds if they wanted to give everyone an even number of games but obviously he can only play a max of 5 now.benedgell wrote:I was just looking at the results for the European Club Cup: Jan Willem Van De Griendt had a great start with 2/3 and a 2600 perf. but didn't play in round 4 or 5. Good to see Mickey on 5/5. Hopefully he can take that form into the European Team.
Re: International Round Up 06/10/09
Just heard that their board one was only there for the first 3 rounds so that should make team selection easier for the remaining rounds!benedgell wrote:I was just looking at the results for the European Club Cup: Jan Willem Van De Griendt had a great start with 2/3 and a 2600 perf. but didn't play in round 4 or 5. Re: International Round Up 06/10/09
Did Adams finish on 6.5/7 in the end? Must surely get a board medal for that. Although the last round game was a bit of a gimme.
Re: International Round Up 06/10/09
Yes, he scored 6.5/7. I think the only other player to equal this was on board 6 and against much lower opposition. I'm not sure what medals are given or where he ranked in the best rating performance but he must be close to the best. Also pleased to see White Rose finally win a match in the last round.benedgell wrote:Did Adams finish on 6.5/7 in the end? Must surely get a board medal for that. Adams' TPR was 2863 - behind only Svidler, Volokitin and Gashimov. Good to see Mickey getting back on form in the build-up to London in December.
